      Description

Zinsser B-I-N is the choice product of restoration professionals thanks to its legendary adhesion to all surfaces, including smooth, dense and hard to paint areas like over glossy paint or varnish, ceramic tiles, glass or PVC surfaces. There’s no need to sand or prepare the surface beyond basic cleaning, for Zinsser B-I-N to bond to the surface and cure fast, ready for a topcoat.

Water stains, grease, oil, soot, rust, mildew, tannin bleed and graffiti are now a thing of the past thanks to Zinsser B-I-N, too, thanks to its excellent stain killing power. With one coat, historic stains, fungal degradation, and surface discolouration can be treated in preparation for a striking new topcoat. It’s not just stains, however, that this product will block – it also blocks, covers and removes odours, too. There is no other product on the market that can duplicate the odour sealing properties of this shellac-based paint. That means no more nicotine, smoke damage, legacy fireplace smells, or mould and mildew odours!

B-I-N is touch dry in approximately 15 mins, and can be recoated in 45 minutes – that’s incredibly fast for a primer. It manages this through its unique alcohol solvent, which evaporates quickly – leaving no residential odour – leaving you to apply a topcoat, faster than ever before.

As well as for use on challenging work and wall surfaces, Zinsser B-I-N is a fantastic wood sealer – perfect for sealing tough knots and sap streaks that tend to bleed through ordinary primers and paint topcoats. It really is the perfect all-surface primer.

      Recommended Uses

      • Recommended for application to interior ceilings, walls, doors, trim, cabinets, furniture, and related paintable surfaces.
      • Exterior uses are limited to spot priming only.
      • May be used to block water, grease, rust, smoke, asphalt, graffiti, and many other types of stains.

      Exterior Substrates

      • B-I-N is great for exterior spot priming over knots, sap streaks, rust stains, copper screening stains, properly prepared weathered siding, and trim touch-up.
      • Ideal for interior spot applications like water stains and filled spots. Note that spot-primed areas on porous surfaces may "flash" or show through paints with poor hiding power including many ceiling paints and glossy enamels - use only high-hiding finish paints

      Sealing

      • B-I-N® seals unpainted or porous surfaces so topcoat paints have better coverage.
      • Fills and binds wood fibers to create a smooth, sealed surface with “enamel holdout” so fewer coats of paint are needed. Note that very porous surfaces may require two coats and may reduce square foot coverage of the product.

      Stain Killing

      • Ultimate interior stain killing primer.
      • One coat will effectively block stains, including water, nicotine, ink, graffiti, crayon, marker, rust and smoke stains so they won’t bleed into the topcoat. Some stains require a second coat.
      • Recommended for permanently sealing heavy fire and water stains B-I-N® seals in smoke stains and odours caused by fires. It also seals in urine and other animal odors from smelling.
      • May be used in areas where incidental contact to food items occurs. B-I-N® is also recommended for sealing nicotine stains or odours from tobacco.

      Glossy Surfaces

      • Glossy enamel paint and clear finishes, ceramic tile, paneling, cabinets and metal surfaces can be primed without sanding or deglossing

      Over Wallcovering

      • May be used to prime existing, soundly adhered, non-porous wallcoverings to hide patterns/dark colours prior to painting.

      Drying Times

      Drying Time (20°C / 50% RH)
      Dry To TouchDry To Recoat
      20 Minutes45 Minutes

      Drying Time

      • In most cases B-I-N® will dry to the touch in 20 minutes and can be recoated in 45 minutes.
      • The dry primer film develops full adhesion after it cures in 1 to 3 days.
      • Lower temperatures, higher humidity and the addition of tint will prolong dry and cure time.

      Coverage

      • Approx. 12.5m2 / litre smooth, painted, non- porous surfaces.
      • Application losses may vary according to the porosity and texture of the substrate and the method of application and should be taken into account when estimating the quantity of product needed.

      Surface Preparation

      • Surfaces should be clean, dry, sound and free of dust, dirt, excessive chalky material, grime, grease, oil, wax, mildew, wallpaper adhesive or any contamination that may interfere with adhesion.
      • If unsure, always wash surface with a household ammonia and water solution, appropriate cleaning solution, or solvent (Do not use tri sodium phosphate based cleaners).
      • Remove any unsoundly adhered coatings
      • Sand any remaining paint film edges smooth with the surface
      • Lightly sand exposed exterior wood with 80 to 100grit sandpaper to remove loose or weathered wood fibers
      • Attempt to remove existing stains by washing, sanding, scraping, etc
      • Bare wood that has been exposed for more than 4 weeks should be lightly sanded or abraded to remove weathered wood fibers.
      • Countersink exposed nail heads and fill all nail holes and gouges.
      • Remove interior mould and mildew before painting with a solution of one-cup household bleach per 5 litres of water or a quality biocidal wash
      • Rinse well
      • Always wear protective clothing and goggles to prevent eye and skin contact with bleach. Do not mix ammonia or any other chemical with bleach solution. If you are concerned about mould and mildew behind walls, underneath flooring, in ventilation systems or other unseen areas, contact a professional who specializes in mould and mildew remediation. For commercial buildings and schools follow appropriate guidelines for mold removal. Remove rust and wipe metal with a cloth dampened in alcohol then apply a rust-inhibitive primer.
      • Warning! If you scrape, sand or remove old paint, you may release lead dust.
      • Eliminate all sources of ignition.
      • In most cases only one coat is necessary to prime most surfaces. If excessive absorption occurs over very porous substrates a second coat may be necessary. Spot priming is recommended only under high-hiding topcoat paints.
      • For best results prime entire surface before painting.

Special precautions should be taken during the surface preparation of pre 1960’s paint surfaces over wood and metal as they may contain harmful lead. When dry-sanding avoid dust inhalation by wearing a suitable protective face mask

      Question:

Hi I’m needing to paint over some chrome which primer would you recommend Kind regards Richard

      Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Thank you for the enquiry, we have contacted you directly for more information.

      questions Allan G on 2021-06-03 13:41:47
      Question:

Hi, I have just painted over some stained and varnished dado rails using BIN. Do I need to paint top coat of other paint within a set time, as I have stair balustrades to BIN also. In addition, I have used BIN on the side of the staircase. Can I paint over BIN with emulsion? Thanks

      Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

This primer can be over painted in 45mins, it develops full adhesion at 1 to 3 days and we would recommend overpainting before this point.

For application over Zinsser B-I-N we can recommend Zinsser Perma-White Interior.

This is available in many RAL and BS colours in a matt or satin finish.

questions Liz Gillgrass  on 2020-06-14 15:38:52
      Question:

I’m looking for a zinsser primer that is solvent based that will act as a primer for some metal bath handles and a wooden fire surround - ideally want one primer - which do you suggest. Thank you

      Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Assuming the surfaces are clean, dry and prepared as detailed in the Technical Data sheet we can recommend Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 for this application if a compatible product is also used as a top coat. This is a waterbased primer.

      questions John. on 2019-10-19 05:58:06
      Question:

My friend wants me to paint over varnished wood What paint do I get is it zinsser bin or bin123 and then can I paint over it

      Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Zinsser B-I-N is recommended for application on internal varnished surfaces before painting. Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Matt, Satin or Gloss can be applied directly to external varnished surfaces once they are clean and have been lightly abraded.

      Question:

Hi, I guess from the drying time the product is water based? can it be sprayed with an airless sprayer suitable for water based paints, and if so should it be thinned? Thanks in advance.

      Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

      Zinsser B-I-N is not water based, it is based on shellac. Do not thin this product, application can be carried out by the following methods;

      • Brush, Roller or Pad – Use natural or synthetic (nylon, polyester or blend)
      • Airless Sprayer – Use .011” – .013” tip @ 800–1, 200 PSI
      • Conventional Sprayer – Spray at 45 – 55 PSI

      Question:

Hi, I am looking to paint my laminate kitchen cupboards with Primer BIN and then what do you suggest for a mat white top coat? Or is a Satin better?

      Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

We would suggest Zinsser Perma-White Interior as a topcoat in the colour and finish of your choice. Satin as a finish in our opinion would be a better choice for cupboards.

questions Sandra Probert on 2019-07-31 20:37:43
      Question:

My bathroom door is knotty pine, painted with water based gloss paint. The decorator did not seal the knots beforehand and I now have ugly streaks and blotches showing through the paint where the knots have seeped through. Will B-I-N fix this, and if so, what do I have to do first? Will all the areas need sanding?

      Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Zinssser B-I-N is the correct primer to seal discolouration from knots. Best not to sand these areas as this can reactivate the sap in the knots. Wipe the discoloured patches with methylated spirits then apply 1-2 coats of B-I-N over the dark patches followed by your top coat. (2 coats will be better on the particularly dark knots).

      questions Aine on 2019-07-12 11:12:47
      Question:

I WANT TO PAINT SOLID OAK KITCHEN BUT KEEP THE GRAIN VISIBLE- WILL THE BIN FLATTEN THE GRAIN - I have already painted a couple off doors but the paint hasn’t adhered very well and Zinsser was recommended by a friend but I don’t want a flat “laminated” appearance

      Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Zinsser B-I-N has a fairly low film build so shouldn't create a thick enough layer to interfere with the grain of the timber if it is pronounced enough to see/feel now. Obviously it is white in colour so it will be completely opaque once coated and we would suggest a test area is carried out first to ensure you are happy with the finished appearance.

      questions John on 2019-05-13 17:10:43
      Question:

Can I use a water based paint directly on top of B-I-N? If so, how long should I let this dry for before painting over it?

      Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

      Yes and you can recoat after 45mins @ 20°C / 50% RH.

      questions Harry on 2019-01-21 13:24:04
      Question:

We are wanting to paint over a pine floor that has been coated with a polyurethane varnish. Firstly, ideally, we need to prime over the varnish and avoid loads of sanding. Then we need a recommendation for a durable paint finish suitable for low tread (bedroom) flooring. Any suggestions? Best Regards Harry

      Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Generally we don’t advise using B-I-N or any of the Zinsser primers on floors however we do know it has been used in low wear situations previously with reasonable success. Apply a good quality floor paint on top, either the Blackfriar Professional Acrylic Floor Paint or Blackfriar Professional Polyurethane Floor Paint would both be options, also the Rust-Oleum Chalky Finish Floor Paint. We would suggest a light abrade to the surface first with a fine grade of sandpaper just to key the surface. Wipe down with a damp cloth then apply the B-I-N. Please Note: The coatings may chip off if subjected to impact from a sharp object.

      Question:

We want to paint over dark stained wood to make a white gloss finish on internal doors and trim work. Would this kill the dark brown stain without bleed through or yellowing. I don't want to have to keep redecorating every couple of years if the paint goes yellow or starts to brown. Thanks

      Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Yes, Zinsser B-I-N would be perfect for this.

      questions Kevin on 2018-08-21 17:32:10
      Question:

We are looking to paint over some pine cladding on bathroom walls and ceiling that had been varnished with a mat varnish at some point , Would you sugest a primer initially, Then a paint on top , Is the primers oil or water based ?

      Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Zinsser Cover Stain would be the recommended primer in this instance. Wash the surfaces well to remove any traces of soap/shampoo residues, apply 1 coat Zinsser Cover Stain followed by a top coat such as Zinsser Perma-White Interior.

      questions Nicky on 2018-03-05 20:43:19
      Question:

Hi, Do you tint Zinsser BIN? Kind regards, Nicky

      Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Yes, we show a small selection of colours available above and can also mix to other pastel shades upon request if required.

questions Liz Armstrong on 2017-10-15 16:56:43
Question: We are painting the solid wood doors, trims & kickboards (which are laminate) of our kitchen units. Which primer would you recommend as the best & most longstanding in a busy kitchen - Zinsser BIN or Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3? The paint we're planning to use is water-based eggshell. Thanks
      Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Zinsser B-I-N is recommended by Zinsser for kitchen units, just make sure surfaces are clean, a good wash down followed by a wipe over with a clean cloth soaked in methylated spirits would be their recommendation.

No need to sand the surfaces. Apply 1-2 coats of Zinsser B-I-N as required to get good coverage then straight on with the top coat.

questions Ian Cartwright on 2017-09-03 20:58:19
Question: Advised to use zinsser b-I-n on emulsion painted interior walls following a house fire to seal in smoke stains and odour but intend to plaster skin some walls. Plasterer will use blue grit bonding prior to skin coat - should I seal before this is applied or seal the finished plaster skin afterwards
      Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

We are not familiar with the blue grit bonding product, however we have viewed product details for Febond Blue grit and this says it can be applied to painted surfaces prior to applying a plaster finish.

In this instance Zinsser B-I-N could be applied to the smoke damaged surfaces first followed by the Blue Grit coat. The surfaces must be dry, free from loose soot deposits and any flaking paint. It may be advisable to apply 2 coats of Zinsser B-I-N to ensure the surfaces are well treated and sealed.

You should also check with Everbuild the manufacturers of the Febond Blue Grit to see if they have any comments on this particular application.

Question: Once I have used the BIN Primer do I need to undercoat before using satinwood? Thanks
      Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

This would be down to personal preference. You wouldn't need to use an undercoat but you can still use one if you wanted to.

      Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Zinsser B-I-N is not a great primer for bathrooms, as it is moisture sensitive it can break down over time. If the ceiling was damp at the time of painting this would not have helped either.

To recoat the ceiling, scrape all the loose flaking paint back to a sound coating and allow the ceiling to completely dry out. Keep windows open to maintain a good airflow to help with the drying out process.

Apply 1 coat of Zinsser Peel Stop to the full ceiling to seal and stabilise any remaining paint. Then finish with 2 coats of Zinsser Perma-White Interior.

Avoid excessive use of the shower for a full 7 days after painting to prevent any condensation forming on the surface of the paint while it is still curing.

Question: Have just used BIN primer as base coat on pine drawer unit. How long before I can coat with Leyland Acrylic Primer Undercoat?
      Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

At 20°C / 50% RH Zinsser B-I-N can be overcoated after 45 minutes.

      Question:

have chalk painted a chest of draws and i don't like it will Zinsser Bin seal the chalk paint, for me to be able to use a oil based paint.

      Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Rust-Oleum Chalky Finish Furniture Paint will come off easily with a kitchen scouring pad and water. If you don’t want to remove it then an oil based paint can be applied directly over the Rust-Oleum Chalky Finish Furniture Paint.

      Question:

What can I thin Zinsser B-I-N with to make it easier to apply to large doors using a roller?

      Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Zinsser B-I-N is not recommended to be thinned at all, if you can't achieve the application you require with Zinsser B-I-N you could try Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Plus which can be thinned with water to aid application if required and offers nearly all the same properties.

      Question:

Can Zinsser B-I-N be used as a primer on ceramic tiles in a kitchen. Tiles are shiny. What is the best procedure going forward?

      Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Zinsser B-I-N can be used on shiny ceramic tiles but we find the Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Plus works better. All you need to do is make sure the tiles are clean and dry, apply 1 coat of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Plus, allow to dry (1 hour) and then over coat with something like Zinsser Perma-White Interior.

      Question:

I want to paint over timber doors and skirting previously covered with dark satin wood stain. Will Zinsser B-I-N stick to it and can it be overpainted with gloss or satin paint?

      Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Zinsser B-I-N is perfect for this use, simply clean any surfaces that require painting and remove any loose and flaking existing coatings by sanding. Once you have primed the surfaces with Zinsser B-I-N you can apply almost any conventional decorative water or solvent based over the top.
