Product description

Upgrading Existing Doors to Fire Doors
Painted White Finish

FlameProof Fire Door Kit (Paint) is an Intumescent Paint System to upgrade 4 existing well constructed, solid (or sturdy) wooden interior door sides to 30 minute protection. No special application skills are required to use our product and each kit comes with a Fire Certificate of Supply to certify the level of protection.

Our system consists of a single pack, water based intumescent base coat and solvent based fire retardant topcoat, available in an eggshell or gloss finish. FlameProof Fire Door Kit (Paint) can be applied to bare timber or previously painted doors as long as the existing coating is prepared thoroughly (see data sheet for full preparation details).

Each Kit Includes:
• FlameProof Intumescent Basecoat
• FlameProof White Topcoat in either Eggshell or Gloss (can be mixed to any RAL or BS colour upon request – please contact us)
• 1.5” Professional Paint Brush
• Pair of Disposable Gloves
• Mixing Stick
• Application Notes
• Product Data Sheets
• Certificate Application Form

UPGRADING DOORS TO 30 MINUTES FIRE RESISTANCE
Most modern normal internal doors can not be upgraded to achieve 30 minute Fire Resistance. Issues include often having a hollow core, being very thin and lightweight or liable to warping shortly after installation. No door answering such a description can be upgraded and should be replaced with a new Fire Door where one is required.

While we recommend the installation of custom-built fire doors, there can be reasons not to do so. FlameProof Fire Door Kit (Paint) is capable of upgrading doors that can afford to lose 2mm to charring:

(1) Solid, joint-free doors with compressed core and reasonable thickness (6mm+) veneer faces bonded to either side. These can be flush doors or pressed to create a moulded look.
(2) Well seasoned or old, sturdy doors with 35mm+ thick frames and panels 10mm+ thick.
(3) Certain other doors not prone to premature collapse.

NOTE: Well seasoned or old, sturdy doors with panels 6mm thick can be upgraded if additional “sacrificial” ply panels 6mm thick are fitted in panel recesses, held in place by the doors beading.

Note for larger contracts: If your doors are in a category which could be upgraded, and your building regulations officer/local authority require a specification in writing then please contact us. A specification can be drafted and put it in writing for you to submit to your Authority, along with this explanatory Technical Note, prior to purchase and commencement of work.

JUSTIFICATION
As doors vary so greatly and the great majority are unsuitable for upgrading, it is neither meaningful or realistic to carry out an official NAMAS / UKAS  Fire Door Fire Test.

FlameProof Fire Door Kit (Paint) uniquely effective formula resulted in the UK’s only successful official UKAS / NAMAS Fire Test Laboratory Fire Resistance Test  to 60 minutes on softwood, with timber lost to charring restricted to 7-10mm at 60 minutes (unprotected, softwood charring is approximately 50mm).

The system was also demonstrated by the Megastructures TV programme documentary “Building from Disaster” documentary restricting charring to 2mm, retaining integrity and insulation throughout a 45 minute maximum severity burn (more severe than BS476 part 22), while identical, unprotected panels burnt in parallel were shown to burn through completely within 6 minutes. (A link to the original filming is available).

Rawlins Paints Limited Technical Department assess doors as suitable based upon the customers description, which features on the Fire Certificate issued, so this information should be checked before ordering.

To issue a certificate for each job, we require that in a fire, the door be capable of losing a total of 4mm to charring, without risk of splitting or cracking of the thinnest areas (usually the panels) or other premature failure, while maintaining insulation.

WHICH SIDE TO PROTECT?
Generally, the room side of doors should be coated, to protect the corridor and stairwell from potential fire in a room. However in some instances it is felt the doors should have some protection on the corridor side, in order to avoid the doors themselves creating a fire hazard. Please note that this is ultimately up to your local authority managing the project so please confirm with them what they would like you to do. If a door divides a corridor, or divides a corridor from a stairwell, it should be treated to the full 30 minute spec. on both sides.

APPLICATION
• Apply 4 coats of FlameProof Intumescent Paint @ 7m² per litre / per coat.
• Then apply 2 coats of FlameProof Fire Retardant Topcoat @ 10m² per litre / per coat

Note: We recommend Zeroflame Intumescent Door Strips are fitted around the door edges or in door casings.

COVERAGE - (coverage is based on using the FULL pack)

1 x FlameProof Fire Door Kit (Paint) will protect 4 door sides + frame

FINISH
As a stanard the FlameProof Fire Door Kit (Paint) packs come as a white colour finish in either Eggshell or Gloss Finishes, however we produce the topcoat in any RAL or BS colour upon request – please contact us for this. (Click HERE to view colour charts)

Please note: Our coverage guide is based on a standard average door side plus frame/architrave totalling no more than 2m2. If your door sizes exceed these measurements, please contact us and we will advise a new coverage rate to suit your doors.

PLEASE DOWNLOAD AND READ all product data sheets and application notes thoroughly before using this kit.

WARNING
To avoid all-too-common, costly (for the customer) “misunderstandings” from competitors, customers should obtain written confirmation, in advance, that the manufacturer will issue an unqualified Fire Certificate for the customer’s particular, specific detail for the building or project in question. Evidence that testing was in a NAMAS / UKAS Fire Test Lab, was reasonably relevant and not perverse, and that it actually passed, is strongly advised!
