How much Concrete Repair Mortar will I need to repair my floor?

1 x 5kg of Concrete Repair Mortar will cover approximately 1m2 at 2.5mm thickness.

As most repairs are un-even in depth you will need to decide upon an average depth of your repair and overall size, for example;

3m2 area at an average of 5mm thick would need 6 x 5kg of Concrete Repair Mortar.

Note: Concrete Repair Mortar can be taken to a ‘feathered edge’ but achieves full strength at 5mm thick. For deeper repairs build up in layers not exceeding 50mm (allowing the Concrete Repair Mortar to cure between layers).

Fire resistance
How do I give steelwork 30 minutes fire resistance?

Protecting steelwork for 30 minutes is simple and can usually be achieved in just ONE coat with our intumescent paint, with no specialist training or application required. You must however, check your steel sections conform to the minimum size requirements below;

30 minute protection is achievable for all types of structural steel, subject to the following minimum steel thicknesses:
• Universal Beams - flange thickness 7.6mm;
• Universal Columns - flange thickness 6.8mm;
• Hollow Sections (30 minutes) - wall thickness 4.0mm;
• Hollow Section Square & Rectangular (60 minutes) - wall thickness 6.0mm;
• Hollow Section Circular (60 minutes) - wall thickness 8.0mm.

Steelwork to be coated must be primed with an Anti-corrosion Primer suited to the intended environment of the building and applied to the Manufacturer’s Specification with the exceptions that the Dry Film Thickness does not exceed 100 microns and that Thermoplastic, Bitumen or Chlorinated Rubber coatings are not used. If the steel has been galvanised or coated with a zinc-rich primer a suitable tie-coat should be applied.

If the steelwork you are wanting to protect conforms to the above, apply our intumescent paint at the following rates;

Horizontal Beams or Vertical Columns: Apply at a rate of 2.3m2 per litre, giving a wet film thickness of 0.42mm.
Square & Rectangular Hollow Sections: Apply at a rate of 1.2m2 per litre, giving a wet film thickness of 0.83mm.
Circular Hollow Sections: Apply at a rate of 0.4m2 per litre, giving a wet film thickness of 2.33mm.

Refer to the manufacturers data sheets before using any product, or contact us if you have any queries – 0113 2455450.

Please note: The above information is based on ALL sides of the steelwork being coated. If you are unable to get to all sides for any reason, please contact us as your spreading rates will be affected and less paint will be needed.

Roof Paint
What is the best product to paint my roof tiles on my house to protect them?

Rust-Oleum Dac Hydro Plus is a premium roof tile coating that offers excellent resistance against weathering giving a durable decorative finish. Dac Hydro Plus allows your roof to breath, remains flexible, has excellent adhesion to most standard roof tiles and can be easily applied by anyone.

You don’t need to be a professional roofing contractor to extend the life of your roof tiles and protect them from the elements for an extra 10 years.

How to do it:
Thoroughly clean your roof with water (preferably using a pressure washer or something similar). If you are struggling to remove moss, etc. then use Rust-Oleum Mathys AMW Moss Killer (an anti fungicidal solution that kills all organic growth). Rinse your roof down and allow to dry.

Then apply your first coat of Rust-Oleum Dac Hydro Plus by paint brush, roller or airless spray. We would recommend thinning with 10% water to allow it to soak into your roof tiles a little, guaranteeing good adhesion. Make sure that 1 x 15lt bucket covers as least 100m2 – if you are getting less coverage than this you are applying it too thickly!

Leave to dry for 24 hours and apply a second coat of Rust-Oleum Dac Hydro Plus undiluted, again adhering to the 100m2 minimum per 15lt bucket.

Please note: Concrete tiles, New Fibre tiles and New Eternit tiles are suitable to be coated without the use of a primer due to the self priming properties of Dac Hydro Plus. However Rust-Oleum Mathys Primer 44HS must be used to prime the following tiles before applying Dac Hydro Plus if they are fully weathered and/or very porous; Fibrous tiles, Eternit, Slate tiles, Terracotta tiles and Redland concrete tiles.

What is Thermalmix, how do I use it and how will it insulate my home?

Q: What is Thermalmix Insulating Paint Additive?

A:Thermalmix is a revolutionary insulating paint additive that makes paint insulate. Thermalmix uses the latest Nano insulating paint technologies to create an effective thermal barrier. This prevents heat loss through your walls and ceilings. Room temperatures normally increase by up to 2 to 3°C, and stay warmer for longer.

Thermalmix insulating paint additive has been developed by our highly-skilled Research and Development team utilizing the latest Clean Cenosphere technology so that when walls and ceilings are coated with paint mixed with Thermalmix insulating paint additive, the surface's ability to absorb heat from the room is inhibited, thus reflecting the heat BACK into your room.

Thermalmix insulating paint additive is environmentally friendly and its breathability helps with condensation problems.

Q: How does Thermalmix Insulating Paint Additive Work?

A: Thermalmix insulating paint additive creates an effective thermal barrier which prevents heat loss through walls and ceilings when used internally in cold countries, and prevents heat gain through walls and ceilings when used externally in hot countries.

Conventional insulation products only work by slowing down the rate of heat LOSS through the wall. The Nano technology within Thermalmix works by helping to PREVENT the heat getting to the wall in the first place by the formation of its unique thermal barrier.

Additional energy saving benefits are also achieved when used on previously insulated walls.

Thermalmix has been independently tested across the world to UK, EU and ASTM standards, and is used throughout the world by multi-national companies, Goverment departments and individual households.

Once the paint is applied to the walls and ceilings and is dry, this will create a thermally efficient barrier.

Q: How to use Thermalmix Insulating Paint Additive?

A:Thermalmix is very easy to use and can be mixed with virtually all paints and coatings. The contents of the bottle should be gradually stirred into 5 litres of paint or coating.

Follow best practice method used by professional decorators:
Empty the paint into a bucket. Empty a pack of Thermalmix into the same bucket. Mix using a manual hand paint stirrer or use a drill based stirrer.

A minimum of two coats of paint containing Thermalmix should be applied to achieve maximum thermal efficiency. Thermalmix gives a very slight textured feel, so perfect for covering minor imperfections. However, for a flatter finish, simply apply a final third coat of paint without Thermalmix mixed in to it.

Q: How Much Paint Does One Bottle mix with?

A: One bottle of our revolutionary Thermalmix Insulating Paint Additive will mix into one 5 litre can of paint.

Q: What Paint Can Thermalmix be mixed in?

A: Thermalmix can be mixed into any good quality interior or exterior paint. You would need to apply two coats to the surface.

Q: Does Thermalmix affect the colour of the paint?

A: Thermalmix insulating paint additive does not affect the paint that it is mixed with, as it is a non-toxic and environmentally friendly product.

When Thermalmix is being mixed with lighter colour (creams and neutral) you will not notice a difference in the colour. However, when it is being mixed with darker colours (dark reds and blues), it will ever so slightly lighten it a shade.

To get over this, we recommend that you apply two coats of Thermalmix and a topcoat with no Thermalmix in the paint. This will bring back you original colour and give you a smoother and flatter finish.

What is Nanotech Energy Saving Emulsion, how do I use it and how will it insulate my home?

Q: What is Nanotech Energy Saving Emulsion?

A:Nanotech Energy Saving Paint has unique insulating properties, which will reduce heat loss through your walls and ceilings. The insulating properties within Nanotech Paint form a thermally efficient barrier reflecting heat back into your room/building, considerably reducing heat loss. It will help increase room temperature, and keep the room warmer for longer.

Q: How does Nanotech Work?

A: Nanotech is made up of a unique formulation, and contains insulating Nano structures. When the walls and ceilings are coating with our Nano insulating technologies, the surface's ability to absord the heat from the room is inhibited, thus reflecting the heat BACK into your room.

Once the paint is applied to the walls and ceilings and is dry, this will create a thermally efficient barrier.

Q: How Does Nanotech Reduce Condensation?

A:Nanotech's thermal barrier will keep the colld wall surface and the warmer air apart. As you touch the wall with your hand you can feel the heat being reflected back, and the wall will feel warmer to the touch.

Nanotech has the same effect with the warm air from your heating system, reflecting it back into the room instead of the heat being drawn to the colder surface of the wall, and escaping.

The contact between the warm air and the cold wall is dramatically reduced once the Nanotech is applied. Therefore the production of water droplets and condensation is dramatically reduced if not totally eliminated.

Q: What size does Nanotech available in?

A: Available in a 5litre can.

Q: What is the coverage of Nanotech Emulsion?

A: Covers up to 35sqm on a two coat application.

Q: Does Nanotech still work if you paint over it with conventional paint?

A: Nanotech will continue to work even though it has been painted over with conventional paint.

Q: Does Nanotech work if you wallpaper over it?

A: You can wallpaper over Nanotech and it will still provide you with a thermal barrier to reduce the heat loss through the walls by reflecting the heat BACK in to the room/building.

Q: How to apply Nanotech Emulsion?

A: Nanotech can easily be applied by brush, roller or spray. If you are spray painting, filters MUST be removed and nozzle size increased to between 0.019 to 0.026. Essentially, use Nanotech in just the same areas as conventional emulsions. Nanotech however has the distinct energy saving advantage and has been scientifically proven to do so. We recommend a minimum of two coats to achieve maximum thermal efficiency.

Q: What if my colour choice is not available in the Nanotech range?

A: In cases where a particular colour has to be matched, Nanotech Basecoat is available or we can tint to the required colour. Again apply two coats before using the colour of your choice. The same energy saving results will be obtained by the thermal barrier, because once it's on, it's working, and keeps working.

Q: What are the environmental benefits with using Nanotech?

A: In today's environment, there is a significant amount of damage caused by conventional paints. This is done through the emission of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's). Nanotech is made by combining clay and titanium oxide, letting the paint breathe easier and having an extremely low VOC level, to help reduce the carbon footprint. Our paints provide you with a healthy and environmentally friendly option as opposed to paints that are made using toxic substances, that damage the environment, our homes and our bodies. Thermakote feels it is necessary that the VOC content and the Petroleum Oil Polymer levels in the paint are limited, whilst maintaining excellent quality and performance.

What is Warmtouch Handrail and Metal Coating, how do I use it and how does it work?

Q: What is Warmtouch Handrail and Metal Coating?

A:Warmtouch coating will make any handrail, and metal surface warm to the touch. It also prevents the handrails becoming slippery due to condensation & other outdoor conditions, allowing you to conform with the Building Regulations 2000 Law, which states handrails need to be slip resistant and not cold to the touch.

Warmtouch coating creates a thermal barrier, which is made up of a unique combination, and contains Nano structures. Our unique combination utilises the very latest Nano and Insulating technologies. This makes the surface feel warmer to touch, and the texture non slip with a high quality semi gloss finish.

Warmtouch coating is ideal for use on surfaces such as: handrails, gates, fences, scaffolding tubes, street furniture and benches etc. as well as othermetal surfaces, tomake them warm to touch. It also helps reduce condensation problems and is suitable for use both internally and externally.

It is also ideal for use externally on other metal surfaces, where the inside needs to remain cooler, e.g. railway signal boxes, metal containers, air conditioning units etc, the coating will reflect heat back out of the unit it is applied to, and help keep the inside cooler allowing it to function more efficiently.

Q: How does Warmtouch work?

A: Warmtouch coating contains a unique technology made up of Nano structures. The structures are formed to trap air within them. These Nano structures create a thermal barrier and when used on handrails will reflect the heat in your hand, back into your hand, rather than allowing the handrail to absorb the heat, thus making the surface warmer to touch and non slip.

Q: How to use Warmtouch?

A:Stir well before use.
Surface preparation: Make sure the surface is clean from any dust or dirt. All surface defects such as peeling, cracks and patches should be corrected before painting.

Application method: Apply 1 coat of primer suitable for the surface. Then apply 2 to 3 coats of Warmtouch coating with a brush or sprayer. (When you are using spray equipment you will need to remove the filters and increase the nozzle size to 0.019 - 0.026 due to presence of Thermilate technologies in the coating.)

Drying time: Under normal conditions, touch dry in 30 mins. Re-coat between 2-4 hours, depending upon environmental conditions.

Cleaning: Clean off all excess paint from brush or roller and thoroughly clean tools with white spirits as normal.
