Frequently Asked Product Questions

Are You Sure My Flat Roof Does Not Need A Primer Coat? Do I Need To Prime Metal Flashing Or Other Metal Surfaces?

Metal flashing should either be primed with an exterior metal primer, or lightly sanded. Most other flat roof/low pitch roof surfaces do not require a primer before applying GacoPro Roof Coating. See the list of acceptable substrates under ‘What Surfaces Can GacoPro Roof Coating Be Applied To?’

Are coated items breathable?

The breathability of a coated item is dependent on how heavily the Base Coat is applied. The lighter the Base Coat, the more breathable the item will be. If a continuous, heavy film is applied, the surface will not be breathable.

Can GacoPro Roof Coating Be Applied By Spray?

Yes, GacoPro Roof Coating may be spray applied with appropriate airless spray equipment in appropriate conditions (i.e. larger projects with precautions taken for overspray etc.) GacoPro Roof Coating must be sprayed without thinning so we advise contacting our Technical Department for details on suggested spray equipment on 0113 2455450 or [email protected]

Can GacoPro Roof Coating Be Cleaned By Pressure Washer?

Yes, but care must be taken. You can pressure wash at a low pressure (below 2500psi) as long as you do not aim the nozzle of the power washer close to the roof surface.

Can GacoPro Roof Coating Be Applied To Roof Decks Or Walkways?

Silicone can be slick, especially when the surface is wet, so GacoPro Roof Coating should not be used for areas with regular foot traffic. Instead, if your roof has areas where foot traffic will be present, for example walkways to service areas etc. you should apply GacoPro WalkPad in conjunction with GacoPro WalkPad Granules to create a highly-visible rooftop walkway with exceptional durability and resistance to foot traffic and tears.

Can GacoPro Roof Coating Be Used on Pitched Roofs?

GacoPro Roof Coating is ideal for flat and low pitched roofs, channels, gutters etc. but can also be used on most pitched roofs just as effectively. Use extreme caution when on a pitched roof, follow all safety guidelines to avoid injury.

Can A Roof Coated With GacoPro Roof Coating Be Painted Over?

Given the fact that GacoPro Roof Coating is a Silicone material, it is not possible to over paint with anything except a new coat of GacoPro Roof Coating.

Can I Use GacoPro Roof Coating On A Roof Sheeted With New WPB Plywood?

GacoPro Roof Coating will stick directly to new, dry WPB plywood (we do not recommend OSB Board). Lay the sheets side by side in the appropriate manner, apply GacoPro Roof Tape or GacoPro Liquid Roof Tape along the joints. As the first coat of GacoPro Roof Coating soaks into the WPB Plywood, we recommend you apply three coats (using contrasting colours for each coat). If working to Part L 1B regulations that necessitates insulation upgrade, we suggest sheeting out over the insulation prior to coating with GacoPro Roof Coating.

Can Rust-Oleum NeverWet be used on fabric?

Rust-Oleum NeverWet will adhere to most fabrics, but it will leave a flat frosted finish on the surface. As with other substrates, test on an inconspicuous area before applying to the entire surface. Particular attention should be paid to seams. Apply a heavier than normal coat of Base Coat around seams to help prevent liquids from penetrating those areas.

Can Rust-Oleum NeverWet be used on surfaces that are continuously submerged?

Rust-Oleum NeverWet relies on a layer of air to form the superhydrophobic coating on the surface of the object. For this reason the product is not recommended for surfaces continuously submerged in water or liquid.

Can Rust-Oleum NeverWet be applied to glass?

Yes, but the glass will no longer be transparent. Rust-Oleum NeverWet dries to a flat frosted finish, therefore it should never be applied to windshields or car windows. Rust-Oleum NeverWet will work on any glass that you want to have superhydrophobic properties, but don’t need to see through.

Can Rust-Oleum NeverWet be used on electronics?

No, Rust-Oleum NeverWet should not be used on electronics.

Can Rust-Oleum NeverWet be recoated?

If the superhydrophobic properties are diminished, Rust-Oleum NeverWet can be reapplied. Lightly sand the surface of the coated object to remove any remaining Top Coat, and then reapply the Base and Top Coat according to the directions on the product information. If reapplying to fabric, simply reapply the Top Coat over the previous coating and allow to dry according to directions.

Can Rust-Oleum NeverWet be removed?

Yes, if you desire to remove Rust-Oleum NeverWet completely, it can be removed by first sanding and wiping the treated object with white spirits or Xylene.

Can Rust-Oleum NeverWet be painted over?

No, if the Top Coat is covered with any type of coating, the superhydrophobic properties will be lost.

Does GacoPro Roof Coating Prevent Mould and Mildew?

Yes, mould and mildew will not grow on the surface of GacoPro Roof Coating because unlike acrylic coatings, GacoPro Roof Coating is inert and does not provide a food source for mildew or mould.

Does GacoPro Roof Coating Solar Reflective White Save Energy?

In warm weather/climates, GacoPro Roof Coating Solar Reflective White dramatically reduces the roof surface temperature which automatically reduces temperatures inside the building/under the roof deck. In instances where it is usually necessary to use air conditioning to keep a building cool in warm weather, GacoPro Roof Coating Solar Reflective White will definitely reduce the need for air conditioning usage which means you can expect to make savings on energy. The amount saved will depend on temperature, insulation used, building construction, etc. Metal buildings or buildings with dark roofs such as old felt, asphalt etc. are some of the most affected in sunny weather and GacoPro Roof Coating Solar Reflective White can make a significant difference to the comfort levels of the occupants.

Does GacoPro Roof Coating Have UK BBA Approval?

BBA certification for GacoPro Roof Coating has been applied for and is currently pending. The American Underwriters Laboratory (UL) certification is available. American testing and certification is very stringent and covers the products performance across many climate zones – see ‘I See GacoPro Roof Coating has a UL (Underwriters Laboratory) Approval Rating, What Does This Mean?’ for more details.

Does GacoPro Roof Coating Crack From Over Exposure To The Sun?

No. GacoPro Roof Coating remains flexible at all times, in freezing and hot conditions, so it will not crack. If you are using GacoPro Roof Coating in especially demanding environments we recommended the use of GacoPro Roof Coating Solar Reflective White as heat is virtually eliminated, which reduces expansion/contraction, which in turn will extended the life expectancy of the coating and roof. GacoPro Roof Coatings inbuilt flexibility will also cope with most structural movement without damage.

Does Rust-Oleum NeverWet work with all liquids?

Certain solvents, alcohols and soap/detergents will cause the surface of the coating to lose superhydrophobicity. Once these chemicals are removed, the superhydrophobicity will generally return. Rust-Oleum NeverWet is less effective at repelling motor oils and oil based liquids.

How Much GacoPro Roof Coating Will I Need For My Roof?

On most projects GacoPro Roof Coating can be applied directly to the roof surface in 2 coats. You have to achieve a final dry film thickness of 560 microns to ensure the product lasts for 20 years which means each 3.8lt will cover 4m² after 2 coats and a 19lt with cover 20m² after 2 coats.

Allow 10-15% more product when applying to rough surfaces and remember to allow a reasonable amount for wastage during application.

How Does GacoPro Roof Coating Compare To Acrylic, Urethane And Bitumen Roof Coatings?

GacoPro Roof Coating has a 20 year product warranty and in most instances lasts as long as the substrate it is applied to. Acrylics, urethanes and bitumen roof coatings if they have a warranty at all, are covered for only a fraction of the time (typically 3-10 years). GacoPro Roof Coating can withstand PERMANENTLY ponding water, this is huge advantage as most flat roofs will have an area where water either is slow to drain or stands for long periods of time. There are no acrylic, urethane or bitumen roof paints that will stand up to the stress of permanent ponding water without blistering or suffering adhesion failure over time.

GacoPro Roof Coating can be applied in a wide temperature range, from 1°C up to 45°C. Acrylics, Urethanes and Bitumen coatings cannot be applied at temperatures below 10°C or above 32°C. Nearly all acrylics, urethanes and bitumen coatings require a primer coat of some kind, GacoPro Roof Coating does not require any primer, sealer, and reinforcing fleece or patch compound. GacoPro Roof Coating does not require a recoat within its 20 year warranty, silicone is inert and does not degrade or wear away. Most other roof coatings require a recoat every 3-5 years to maintain protection and appearance.

How Do I Deal With Cracks, Holes, Joints Etc. On Roofs Before Applying GacoPro Roof Coating?

After thorough cleaning and allowing the surface to dry, choose between GacoPro Roof Tape (50mm x 15m rolls) or GacoPro Liquid Roof Tape (3.8L or 19L cans).

GacoPro Roof Tape is a self-adhesive seam tape made of cross linked polymers of butyl and E.P.D.M. rubber, coated on fleece backing. GacoPro Roof Tape maintains its elasticity and splice integrity when subjected to severe ultraviolet rays, thermal shock, ponding water, and extremely low temperatures.

GacoPro Liquid Roof Tape is a thick, high-build, rubber-like liquid comprised of 100% silicone and microfibers. The unique properties allow it to replace traditional rubber and mesh seam tape when used in conjunction with GacoPro Roof Coating. Ideal for the edges of upstands, sharp angles, around vents, screw heads etc.

Please note, any ripples, wrinkles etc. present on the existing roof substrate will still appear on the finished job, albeit they will be waterproofed.

How abrasion resistant is Rust-Oleum NeverWet?

Rust-Oleum NeverWet is resistant to normal wear and tear; however, with excessive abrasion or if applied to a walking surface, the superhydrophobic properties will be quickly diminished. In many situations, the superhydrophobic action may be reduced, but the remaining Top Coat and Base Coat still provide protection to the coated surface. Superhydrophobicity can be restored by scuff sanding the object to remove the residual Top Coat and then recoating the object with Base and Top Coat.

How long will the Rust-Oleum NeverWet coating last?

Environmental conditions will effect the longevity of the Rust-Oleum NeverWet coating. Abrasion is the leading cause of reduction of the coatings life, but also exposure to high pressure water can reduce the life of the coating.

I See GacoPro Roof Coating has a UL (Underwriters Laboratory) Approval Rating, What Does This Mean?

In America the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) is a trusted source for authorities that certifies, validates, tests, inspects and audits manufacturer’s products. They provide the knowledge and expertise to help consumers navigate growing complexities across the supply chain from compliance and regulatory issues to trade challenges and market access. In this way, they help facilitate global trade and deliver peace of mind.

GacoPro Roof Coating is UL rated when applied to a non-combustible surface.

Is There A Difference Between GacoPro Roof Coating Light Grey And Solar Reflective White?

Technically both colours are the same, however, most importantly, the Solar Reflective White reflects away 85% of the sun’s heat. Less heat on your roof means your roof is not subjected to the damaging expansion/contraction that takes place on non-white roofs which means, the Solar Reflective White adds substantially to the life of your roof. If you want Light Grey as your finish, that is ok but be aware that the Light Grey does not have the same heat reflecting characteristics as the Solar Reflective White.

Another very useful benefit of using two colours as first and second coat is, you can easily see what you’ve covered and any areas not covered sufficiently (initial substrate or first coat) will show through, meaning more product is required to cover properly & achieve the correct film thickness.

What Happens If I Have A Part Tin Of GacoPro Roof Coating And Want To Keep It For Future Use?

Once a container of GacoPro Roof Coating is opened, the curing process has started. Use the entire product on your project if possible. Allow any remaining product in the container to solidify and dispose of in the proper manner.

If you only part use a tin and wish to keep the remainder, close can lid to store the product, over time some skinning will occur. When you next need to use the product, open the can and remove the ‘skin’ which may be on top and stir well and apply.

Skinning is when the topmost layer of coating begins to cure in the can. Silicone is moisture-cured, so high heat and humidity will cause the product to skin. To minimise skinning over several days, gently pour about a 12mm layer of White Spirit on top of product until it is completely covered and do not move can until ready to reuse. When ready, pour off the White Spirit layer, and stir can contents thoroughly with a power mixer. Keep container tightly closed between applications to minimise surface skinning.

What Temperatures And Conditions Can I Apply GacoPro Roof Coating In?

GacoPro Roof Coating can be directly applied to most clean and dry surfaces in a wide temperature range, from 1°C up to 45°C. Do not apply below or outside these values.

What Equipment Do I Need to Apply GacoPro Roof Coating?

Full training can be provided for roofing contractors wishing to become approved applicators. However for most flat roof projects a 1″ solvent resistant roller with extension pole is preferred for the application to the main roof areas. You can either dip the roller directly into the can or pour a trail of product along a marked out area and then use a 2-3mm serrated edge squeegee to spread out before finishing with the roller. A mini 4″ solvent resistant roller or good pure bristle brush is best for upstands, gutters, parapets and other hard to reach areas.

GacoPro Roof Coating should be applied liberally to ensure adequate film thickness is achieved, be careful not to over roller and spread too thinly. Spraying is possible but only recommended for professional users and for large projects – see ‘Can GacoPro Roof Coating Be Applied By Spray?’ For corrugated roofs such as asbestos and metal profile sheet, special long pile corrugated rollers can be purchased to ensure even coverage for the peaks and valleys.

What Happens If It Rains After Application of GacoPro Roof Coating?

GacoPro Roof Coating should be applied on to clean, dry roofs when no rain is expected for at least 2 hours. If it should happen to rain before a skin forms on the GacoPro Roof Coating, it may produce and an orange peel effect where the rain droplets have landed on the coating. GacoPro Roof Coating will NOT wash off and while it will not necessarily compromise the coatings performance, it will not look as aesthetically pleasing as it should.
