Why Mould Needs Treating

As well as being unsightly, mould can cause permanent damage to property if left untreated. Mould will work its way through walls and ceilings and will eat through coatings if simply covered up with paint. Its presence will cause untold damage in stock rooms as well as serious health problems from skin irritations to respiratory issues.

It goes without saying, but always look to repair the source of mould and mildew stains and condensation before painting. Our large range of roof repair products will seal up cracks and guard against leaks on flat and pitched roofs, waterproofing immediately, making them ideal for routine maintenance as well as in emergencies.

Once the cause of the stain has been fixed you can start to renovate the damage.

Step 1: Surface Preparation

Make sure that the affected surfaces are clean and dry, removing loose material with scrapers or stiff-bristled brushes, to prevent anything from interfering with the adhesion of paints and coatings that are to be applied. Sound edges should be feathered with fine-grade abrasive paper, and any visible signs of organic growths should be removed.

Treat the affected area with Zinsser Mould Killer, in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, and allow to dry.

If the area has sound paint remaining, remove any contaminants by cleaning down with Zinsser Universal Cleaner & Degreaser, rinsing thoroughly with clean water to remove all residues and allowing to dry.

Cracks and small defects in the surface should be filled with suitable fillers as appropriate in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, allowing them to dry before rubbing down the surface using a fine-grade abrasive paper, and removing all dust.

Step 2: Priming

All stained, bare and filled areas should be primed with a single coat of Zinsser B-I-N Primer Sealer in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, to help adhesion of decorative topcoats and preventing any stains from bleeding through.

Zinsser’s B-I-N Primer Sealer can be recoated after 45 minutes in normal drying conditions for a fast turnaround when renovating damaged properties and rooms.

Step 3: Decoration

Once the area is dry, the surface previously affected by mould, mildew or condensation can be redecorated and restored to former glory by using two full coats of Perma-White Interior Paint, which is available in matt, satin or a semi-gloss finish. Apply in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, allowing a minimum of 2 hours between coats for suitable drying.

Perma-White Interior Paint is very low odour which shouldn’t disrupt business as it dries and contains a biocide that protects the dried coating against mould and mildew, guaranteed for 5 years.
