Cargo and Ballast Tank Paints and Coatings

Cargo and ballast tank coatings are engineered for high performance in some of the harshest conditions within the marine and shipping sectors. These coatings provide protection against corrosion, chemical exposure, saltwater, and mechanical wear. Whether applied inside water ballast tanks, crude oil tanks, or potable water storage tanks, each coating is selected to meet strict industry regulations and vessel-specific needs. These paints are also often suitable for contact with grain and drinking water, depending on certification.

Ideal for steel structures, cofferdams, void spaces, pontoons, bilges and wet spaces, these products ensure internal protection that extends service life and reduces long-term maintenance costs. The right system improves tank safety and reduces contamination risks from sludge, sewage, or petroleum products. In bilge areas in particular - where water, oil, and debris accumulate - additional protection is often required. To prepare these areas for coating, users may also require Bilge Paints and Cleaners to remove residues and improve surface adhesion before applying specialist tank paints.

Cargo and Ballast Tank FAQs

What standards must coatings for potable water tanks meet?

Coatings for drinking water tanks must be certified safe for contact with potable water. This usually involves approval from organisations like WRAS or ANSI/NSF, depending on location. These products undergo rigorous testing to ensure they do not release harmful chemicals or taint the water supply. Always check the product data sheet to confirm the coating meets the required standards for safe use in drinking water storage and transportation.

Can the same coating be used for crude oil and sewage tanks?

Not usually. While some high-performance coatings are resistant to both hydrocarbons and biological waste, most are designed for specific environments. Crude oil tanks require products with excellent chemical resistance and barrier properties, whereas sewage tanks may need coatings with antifungal or antibacterial additives. Choosing the correct product helps avoid breakdown or contamination. Technical support should always be consulted for correct specification.

How should void spaces and cofferdams be coated?

Void spaces and cofferdams are prone to condensation and limited ventilation, making corrosion control difficult. Coatings used in these areas must tolerate damp conditions and resist rust spread. A surface-tolerant epoxy or moisture-cured urethane is often recommended. Preparation is still critical, and areas must be cleaned of salts, scale, and old coatings before application. Ensure coating application follows the manufacturer’s guidance on humidity and temperature.

Are these coatings suitable for underwater structures?

Yes, certain products within this category are developed specifically for use on submerged surfaces. These coatings often feature high adhesion, impact resistance, and chemical durability. They are used on pontoons, ballast tanks, and structural steel in underwater or tidal zones. Many must be applied in dry dock conditions before submersion, although some modern options allow for application to damp surfaces. Verify application and curing conditions for underwater use.

Do I need a primer before applying tank coatings?

In most cases, yes. A primer helps improve adhesion and provides an initial layer of protection against corrosion. The type of primer will depend on the substrate material, surface condition, and the environment in which the tank operates. For example, a zinc-rich primer might be used on steel in highly corrosive areas. Clean surfaces thoroughly beforehand - especially bilges - where degreasers and Bilge Paints and Cleaners are often used to ensure proper bonding.
