Cement & Concrete Repair Materials – Rapid Hardening Mortars, Grouts & Crack Fillers
Cement and concrete repair materials are formulated to restore strength, durability, and usability to damaged or deteriorated concrete substrates. Whether patching surface defects, filling cracks, reinstating impact resistance, or repairing voids and edge spalls, these products are critical for ensuring long-term structural performance. Repair mortars, grouts, and crack fillers are available in various forms - including thixotropic, pourable, and fast-curing options - to suit site-specific repair work across industrial, commercial, and civil engineering sectors.
Applications include worn factory floors, concrete steps, kerbs, loading bays, ramps, structural columns, and soffits. Products are available for both cosmetic and structural repairs, with high-build, moisture-tolerant, and polymer-modified options for overhead, vertical, and horizontal surfaces. Rapid-set mortars allow same-day reinstatement in high-traffic areas, while resin-based crack injection systems seal voids and improve substrate cohesion. Many options meet BS EN 1504 standards and are suitable for use in aggressive or wet environments.
Repair materials also serve as a base for protective coatings, waterproofing systems, screeds, or anti-slip surfaces. In transport infrastructure and heavy industry, anti-carbonation products prevent long-term degradation. These materials are widely used in water treatment plants, food production, educational buildings, marine sites, and more. Selecting the correct repair solution depends on the substrate condition, exposure, loading, and overcoat system planned. For help specifying the right repair material, or to arrange a site survey, technical support is available.
Cement & Concrete FAQs
Can these repair products be used on damp or wet surfaces?
Yes, several cementitious and resin-based systems are moisture-tolerant or even designed for use in damp conditions, whilst building chemicals such as primers and additives can be used to alter curing times and adhesion. These are ideal for basement walls, external slabs, or areas exposed to weather. However, surface preparation remains critical - clean, sound, and properly profiled substrates are essential.
How deep can I apply a concrete repair mortar in one go?
This depends on the product. Some mortars are formulated for high-build applications and can be applied in thick layers (up to 100mm or more), while others are for surface repairs only. Always check the product’s technical data sheet for maximum build and guidance on layering.
Is a primer required before applying a repair mortar?
Often yes. Bonding primers improve adhesion between the repair mortar and the substrate. Some products are self-priming, but in high-stress or high-moisture environments, a primer is usually advised. Refer to the individual product instructions.
Can I coat over the repair afterwards?
Most cement and concrete repair products are compatible with industrial coatings, screeds, line marking paints, or waterproof membranes once fully cured. Always allow the appropriate cure time and confirm compatibility with the coating manufacturer.
Are any of these repair materials approved for use in water or food environments?
Yes. Some products meet WRAS or other hygiene-related approvals for use in potable water or food production areas. These are typically solvent-free, low-VOC, and highly resistant to chemical or microbial attack.
What surface preparation is needed before applying a concrete repair product?
All loose, dusty, or unsound material must be removed. Substrates should be clean, dry or suitably damp, and mechanically prepared - usually by grinding, scabbling, or shotblasting - to ensure keying. Oil, grease, or laitance must be removed.
Can I use these on vertical or overhead surfaces?
Yes. Thixotropic mortars are designed for non-sag application to vertical and overhead areas. These products stay in place during curing and are ideal for soffits, beams, and concrete columns.
