How often should you oil decking?
Traditional wood decking oils typically need refreshing every 6 to 12 months to maintain protection and their pleasing finish.
At Rawlins paints, we stock next-generation decking oils from Rubio Monocoat and Osmo that colour and nourish wood decking in one application. They leave a microporous, penetrating finish which does not crack, peel or flake, and will last much longer than traditional wood oils such as boiled or raw linseed oils.
Is it better to oil or paint decking?
Decking oils nourish the wood from within, replacing essential oils may have been lost from exposure to the elements. Our next-generation wood oils from Osmo and Rubio Monocoat also provide extreme weatherproofing and UV stability. Using a wood oil on decking preserves the natural look of the wood.
Paints are also very protective and a great choice for decking, however, you cover the wood grain and its natural beauty with opaque colours. So it depends on the finish you are looking for!
Does decking oil peel?
Providing you have prepared the surface correctly and applied the wood oil inline with the manufacturer's instructions (found on each products' respective data sheet), our next-generation wood decking oils will not crack, peel or flake.
