What is the difference between wood stain and wood dye?

Wood stains have pigments that stick in the grain and also provide protection against weather and UV light, whilst wood dyes penetrate the wood with their coloured molecules, but require a protective coat to be covered with.

What is the best way to dye wood?

Woods can be dipped into dye or brushed applied, running with the grain. Dipping is especially effective as it allows dyes and base colours to soak into the timber for several minutes. Follow the manufacturer's application instructions to achieve the finish you require.
