Flame Retardant Topcoats

Flame retardant paints and topcoat finishes available at Rawlins Paints can be used after maintenance work has been on or around previously installed fire-retardant paint systems, or simply as decorative finishes over intumescent coatings and undercoats.

FR topcoats will limit the surface spread of flames in the outbreak of a fire, and protect combustible substrates – this is dependent on the underlying substrate, and the complete and correct installation of a fire retardant or intumescent paint system.

These topcoat paints and coatings will help deliver a non-combustible fire rated paint system along with recommended and compatible primers and undercoats, to substrates including wood, plasterboard, structural steel and cast-iron. Alternately, some may be used direct to bare or previously painted, but non-combustible surface areas – typically walls and ceilings.

Some fireproof paint systems need to be finished with a coloured topcoat and maintained periodically, either due to environmental conditions, or renovation work in a property or building complex. The range of hard-wearing and decorative flame retardant topcoats available from Thermoguard, Zeroflame and Bollom allow the user to finish and maintain their projects in a wide range of colours and finishes without damaging the fire-retardant properties of the original system.

Our Class 0 and BS EN Class B flame retardant topcoats are most commonly used in two scenarios;

  1. To finish and complete a fire-retardant system, usually where a basecoat has been applied
  2. Where an existing fire-retardant system or item requires maintenance or re-decoration, using one of our flame retardant topcoats ensures the surface won't lose the level of fire protection it currently has. Available in matt, satin, eggshell, gloss finishes and almost the full range of RAL, BS and NCS colours.

Bollom Flameguard Flame Retardant Topcoats and Finishes

Bollom’ Flameguard range of decorative fire-retardant topcoat finishes and systems for interior walls and trim allow users to match any existent colour scheme, or upgrade to a topcoat colour scheme, without damaging the underlying fire-retardant system. Topcoats are available in acrylic eggshell, gloss or vinyl matt finishes, for wood, timber or steel, these products can be used to achieve Class 0 fire rating over Brosteel Ultra 60, Fireshield Ultra, Bollom Flameguard Ultra Primer / Undercoat, or Broflame Ultra Fire Protective Base Coat – see each product for system compatibility.

Bollom Flameguard Ultra Gloss, Ultra Acrylic Eggshell and Ultra Vinyl Matt are designed to restrict and contain the surface spread of flames and their heat release, allowing for vital escape routes in the event of a fire. As decorative topcoats, they are amongst the most comprehensive fireproofing systems on the market, providing fire resistance to structural steel, internal walls and ceilings, external and internal wood, and wood veneer.

Bollom Flameguard Ultra Primer will improve surface adhesion on plaster, cement, concrete and old paint work, for a topcoat finish, as well as sealing in and blocking any problematic stains from reappearing. It is intended for use with the Flameguard topcoats from Bollom.

These topcoats are ideal for communal areas, including public buildings, office complexes, shopping and retail buildings, schools, and hospitals. They can be used on broad walls and large surface areas, timber, wood and select metals. The Flameguard Ultra range from Bollom complies with building regulations for fire protection, and has been fully tested to BS476 – Parts 6 and 7.

Certificates

All of the intumescent paints we offer have been tested to varying British/European standards by recognised independent third parties depending on their required use and performance. In addition to these industry standard tests, some products also offer additional paperwork after use by way of a ‘certificate’ that can be obtained in different ways - manufacturer dependent. Some require a form to be completed and returned by email, others have online application forms, others can be simply called to provide project details verbally. Not ALL products offer this additional supplement and if this type of certificate is important to your project you should contact our Technical Team on 0113 2455450 (option 2) or [email protected] to advise them of this so they can ensure they recommend a suitable product accordingly. Certain larger projects may also require the involvement of an independent inspector, again you should contact our Technical Department to discuss this if required.
