Heat Resistant Paints

Heat resistant paints available at Rawlins Paints are designed to withstand high-temperatures of up to 750°C on commercial and industrial metal/metallic surfaces and structures – ranging from heat treatment applications, including incinerators and furnace chimneys, to pipework and vessels in chemical processing plants. For very demanding inland/offshore environments, VHT (very-high-temperature) paints and coatings are also required to deliver high-performance humidity resistance and anti-corrosive protection against liquids including water, oil and gasoline/petrol, as well as salt, gas, rust and chemical solvents.

High temperature paint for metal is not designed to deliver fire retardant properties, but can be used on industrial chimneys and steel melting applications. These high-temperature coatings will not react to flames and cannot contain the surface spread of flames. The most commonly used heat resistant paint colours include black and silver (also referred to as aluminium). Some heat resistant coatings we stock are also available in white, grey, red oxide and orange.

How Does Heat Resistant Paint Work?

It’s important to understand the difference between heat resistant paint and fire proof paint. Although it could be easy to confuse the two, heat proof paint is a surface coating and does not protect the material in the event of a fire.

High temperature paint for metal is designed to not break down at very high temperatures, so they can be safely used for industrial applications and processing equipment that need to regularly be at elevated temperatures of up to 750°C.

Fire retardant paints, on the other hand give off an inert gas to slow down and stop the spread of fire on the surface and intumescent paints provide an insulating barrier by swelling up to 40 times their original thickness. Please see here for the fire-retardant paints stocked by Rawlins Paints.

Surfaces, industrial environments and applications for which heat resistant paints are suitable for, include:

  • Incinerators
  • Kilns
  • Flare stacks
  • Pipework
  • Vent covers
  • Petrochemical industry structures and refineries
  • Chemical plants
  • Natural gas processing and biochemical plants
  • Power stations
  • Offshore gas and oil rigs
  • Metal, aluminium alloy, cast iron, etc. dividing and collecting breeching used on:
    • Water pipes and hoses
    • Dry riser inlets
    • Fire hose coupling
    • Fire hydrants
    • Stand pipes
    • Hydrant stand posts
    • Landing valves
  • Process vessels
  • Engines
  • Furnace chimneys
  • Chimneas

Brands

We have the following heat-resistant paint brands in stock: Blackfriar, Coo-Var, International (including Intertherm 50), Jotun and Rust-Oleum. These brands also include anti-corrosion products.

How to Apply Heat Resistant Paint

One of the more popular ways to apply heat proof paint is via spray devices. Jotun's range can be applied with spray guns, also available at Rawlins Paints. Jotun Solvalitt Alu is heat proof for temperatures up to 600°C and acts as a heat resistant primer, mid-coat or finish-coat on steel. Although lots of our products can be used as heat resistant spray paint, there are also plenty of brushed heat resistant coatings, which can also be applied with a traditional roller if preferred.

Very High Heat Resistant Metal Paint

Various metal structures, surfaces and substrates that get up to high-temperatures require painting, and finding the best heat resistant paint for your needs is key to ensuring the finish is appropriate for use.

If you’re looking for high heat paint for barbecues, boilers, exhaust pipes and other smaller interior surfaces, then have a look at our Rust-Oleum and Blackfriar heat resistant paint.

Rust-Oleum Heat Resistant Paint 750°C can be used on bare metal or slightly rusted surfaces and provides a heat resistant coating. Rust-Oleum HR protects up to a dry heat of 750°C and can be applied inside or in a sheltered outdoor environment. Perfect for engines, barbecues, vents and pipes - it’s available as an aluminium heat resistant coating or in black satin-matt.

Blackfriar High Heat Resistant Paint is great for fire grates, barbecues, chimneys and radiators and can withstand heat up to 600°C and is ideal if you’re looking for a water based, black heat resistant paint with a matt finish.

Enamel Paint

An enamel heat resistant coating, Coo-Var Heat Resistant Satin Black can be used on surfaces that need to withstand heat up to 600°C and is ideal for areas that frequently get hot. It can be used as a single coat for hot pipes, radiators and fire surrounds.

Another high-quality heat resistant enamel paint is Teamac High Temperature Aluminium Paint. Teamac can be used at temperatures up to 450°C and is applied with a brush or roller. The satin finish is ideal for metal and can also be used as a single coat on fire surrounds and hot pipes.

Aluminium Paint

With a heat resistance of up to 250°C, Jotun Aluminium Paint HR is perfect for engine parts and exhaust pipes. Its aluminium finish coating can be used as a heat resistant primer, mid coat or top coat and can be used on carbon steel and aluminium substrates if they’re properly prepared.

Industrial Heat Retardant Paint

Many heat resistant coatings also have an anti-corrosive finish, which adds more protection for the surface. Rust-Oleum 4200 Heat Resistant Primer can be used on incinerators, stacks, kilns and other very high temperature surfaces that are prone to rust. This heat proof primer should be used on new, bare steel or blasted steel underneath Rust-Oleum 4200 Heat Resistant Topcoat.

If you’re looking for protection from corrosion on stainless steel industrial surfaces, Jotun Jotatemp 650 is ideal. Jotatemp 650 works specifically on surfaces that need to withstand extreme high and low temperatures, between -185°C and 540°C and can be applied directly onto a surface that is at 400°C.

For large aluminium surfaces, such as offshore structures, petrochemical and chemical plants and power stations, International Intertherm 891 is an excellent choice. Intertherm 891 is a general-purpose heat resistant paint that gives a silver finish as it’s coloured with aluminium flake. It can be used as an industrial maintenance coating on steelwork with a temperature ranging from ambient to 315°C.
