Surface Preparation
- Ensure surfaces to be painted are free from loose paint, rust, wax, oil and grease
- Some previously painted surfaces should be abraded to provide a better key
- Cover surrounding areas to protect from spray mist
Application
- Shake can vigorously for 1 minute after mixing ball begins to rattle, continue to shake regularly during use
- Hold can 30cm from surface and spray in a steady back and forth motion, slightly overlapping with each stroke
- For best results whilst spraying keep the can the same distance from the surface and keep the can in motion
- Apply several light coats a few minutes apart
A 400ml can covers approximately 2m² dependent upon surface profile / porosity.
Cleaning
- To clear spray for future use, turn can upside down and spray until clear gas is emitted
Drying & Recoating

- Recoat after 30 minutes
Drying times are based on warm (15°C), dry application conditions with good ventilation.
Lower temperatures and higher humidity will prolong the drying times. 1-2 coats recommended.
Limitations

- Apply only when temperature is between 10-32°C and relative humidity below 85%
- Special precautions should be taken during the surface preparation of pre 1960's paint surfaces over wood and metal as they may contain harmful lead
- When dry-sanding avoid dust inhalation by wearing a suitable protective face mask
- A copy of the appropriate Health & Safety Data Sheet should be consulted prior to using the product

Robert on 2024-03-03 19:41:48 | Question: Is this product able to give a painted surface water resistance |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Thank you for the enquiry, please can you provide more information to [email protected] so we can check if it is suitable.
deborah o'brien on 2022-07-27 13:29:06 | Question: Hi, can this be used to seal faux gold leaf |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: This product is designed to used as a topcoat over other Rust-Oleum products. We would recommend testing on a small area prior to full application if you wish to use this over faux gold leaf.
Louise on 2022-01-13 17:19:10 | Question: How can I remove it? It sprayed on another surface and I'd like to get it off if possible! Thank you |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: If the paint is still wet it can be cleaned up with Xylene or mineral spirits. Once it has dried it would need to be abraded.
Maryah on 2021-01-02 18:30:10 | Question: Can this be used to seal and protect painting on fabric? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: No, unfortunately we do not have a product to recommend for this application.
Ross Mathers on 2020-05-15 16:11:17 | Question: Could this be used to seal a painted design on a plate and be safe to eat from? Thanks! |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: No, this product has not been tested to be food safe.
Christian on 2020-04-22 09:33:45 | Question: Can this product be used on rubber soles of shoes if painted with acrylic paint |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: No, unfortunately we do not have a product for this application.
brian on 2020-03-05 08:28:17 | Question: Could I use this on wooden dolls painted with artist's acrylics? I tested some a few months ago and the product seems great, gives me the finish I want and hasn't damaged the paint or wood. Is there a reason why I shouldn't use it? Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: With this type of product and application we would always suggest a trial which you have already carried out. A trial will always provide a better insight as to whether the product will be suitable for a particular use than theoretical technical data. So, if it has provided the finish and performance you require, we could see no reason you couldn't use it.
Anna on 2019-05-19 17:14:38 | Question: Can I use RustOleam crystal clear sealant to seal paint on my spice jar lids? Is it safe to use this way? Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Yes it can be used for this type of application as long as the paint is well cured. If the paint is not fully hardened the Crystal Clear may react and cause it to wrinkle. You can do a test first, build up a few light coats rather than 1 heavy coat as this is also more likely to cause a reaction with the paint.
Bianca on 2019-02-08 14:35:25 | Question: Is Rust-Oleum Crystal Clear compatible with graffiti acrylic paints? With any acrylic paints? If not, which clear coat can you recommend? Thanks. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Rust-Oleum Crystal Clear has some strong solvents in which could attack some types of paint coatings, so we would recommend a test area first to ensure suitability.
Kath on 2018-11-11 18:46:08 | Question: Could this be used ontop of painted ceramic tiles in the bathroom? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Rust-Oleum Crystal Clear has very strong solvents in as do most aerosols and the product is quite likely to attack a freshly applied paint coating. If the paint has been on the tiles for a month or so it might be OK but we can’t guarantee it. A test area would be advisable. Provided the tiles are not in a shower enclosure, another option would be Blackfriar Quick Drying Varnish, this would be less likely to react and will be easier to work with.
Alex on 2018-03-09 00:00:33 | Question: Do you have a clear coat (not high gloss) for use on heat shield behind wood stove |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Rust-Oleum Crystal Clear is based on acrylic resins which soften and go tacky when warm, we wouldn’t recommend its use for this application. The maximum temperature it could go to before it starts to go soft would be something like 40-50°C.
Simon on 2016-05-08 18:43:06 | Question: Will Rustoleum Crystal Clear be suitable to use on a surface painted with one of your custom mixed Combicolour aerosols? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: No, but you could use Rust-Oleum Hard Hat 2500 Transparent Protection instead. Allow the Rust-Oleum Custom Filled Aerosols to dry for at least 48 hours before application of the clear protective coating.
Susan Edwards on 2015-10-02 09:34:19 | Question: Can I use Rust-Oleum Crystal Clear on chrome to stop it rusting? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Yes, but you must make sure the surface is thoroughly cleaned and lightly abraded to provide a key first.
Jenny Ogg on 2015-05-15 20:13:13 | Question: Seem to be able to get Rustoleum Crystal Clear Enamel in USA but cant find it in UK. Is Rust-Oleum Crystal Clear the same? Looking to coat hand made coasters with a heat resistant spray - is this heat resistant at all? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Rust-Oleum Crystal Clear is the UK equivalent of the American product you have seen and will withstand temperatures up to 100°C (dry heat). It's ideal for providing a clear protective coat to many different surfaces and should be perfect for your coasters.
