When installing SuperGrip Lite Multi Purpose Step Covers, standard personal protective equipment should be worn as a minimum. These include a dust mask, safety goggles, heavy-duty gloves and overalls. Dry fit all step covers to ensure that they fit freely and that they sit flat down on to the surface. Drill the fixing locating holes in all the step covers. Whilst individual circumstances will vary, the following can be used as a guide:
Instructions for Use
SuperGrip Lite Multi Purpose Step Covers are generally glued and screw fixed. Rust-Oleum SuperGrip Adhesion Mastic is ideal since it will make up minor deviations in the substrate and prevent the step covers drumming or rocking. The Rust-Oleum SuperGrip Adhesion Mastic should be applied to sound, clean dry surfaces if it is to be the only method of fixing in lightly trafficked areas. If application is to damp, dirty or friable surfaces or in very cold weather, use Rust-Oleum SuperGrip Adhesion Mastic to bed the step covers into place and then always screw fix. Screw fixings are generally made at about 600mm intervals.
The Anti-Slip material is quite tough to cut so if too much trimming is envisaged, please ask about our cut to size service. If required, the Anti-Slip step covers can be trimmed on site to suit using an industrial jigsaw and appropriate cutting blades (Bosch “T101 A1F” or similar are ideal).
If mechanical fixing is required, the following may be used as a guide.
- To timber: No.8 x 30mm zinc plated or stainless steel screws.
- To steel plate: No.8 x 20mm self-tapping pan head Pozi stainless steel screws or No.8 x 20mm self drilling pan head Philips zinc plated screws.
- To concrete: No. 8 x 30mm zinc plated or stainless steel impact anchors (Hilti HPS-1 or similar).
- To open mesh: Stainless steel or zinc plated saddle clips and domed head bolts suitable in length for the depth of the existing treads.
When drilling holes in the panels we do not recommend countersinking.
Very little preparation of the substrate is required. It should be reasonably clean and dry if the Rust-Oleum SuperGrip Adhesion Mastic is to be the only means of fixing. Badly dished or holed concrete etc should ideally be filled.Rust-Oleum SuperGrip Adhesion Mastic will take up minor undulations and imperfections.
Hold the step covers in place and drill through the panel and into the substrate. A rawlplug will probably be required in a concrete base. The drill hole in the panel does not need to be larger than that drilled into the substrate.
Drill two holes at each end of the SuperGrip Lite Multi Purpose Step Cover, one approximately 15mm in from the back edge and 15mm in from the side. The second hole should be approximately 15mm in from the side and on the line where the black tread meets the yellow nosing. It is unlikely that the SuperGrip Lite Multi Purpose Step Covers will require additional fixings in the middle of the tread, (unless the tread is over 2000mm long).
-20 to +80°c
After drilling holes in the panels, turn the panel over and apply the mastic. (The 310ml tube fits into a standard skeleton gun). Apply a 6mm bead around the periphery of the step cover and in horizontal stripes at approximately 200mm intervals. Immediately press the step cover firmly into place. Rust-Oleum SuperGrip Adhesion Mastic will generally have achieved a good bond within 2-4 hours in normal drying conditions. If Rust-Oleum SuperGrip Adhesion Mastic is to be the only method of fixing, please ensure that a good bond has been achieved before re-opening the area for use.
As a guide 1 x 310ml of Rust-Oleum SuperGrip Adhesion Mastic will fix;
- 4 x 750mm Step Covers
- 3 x 1000mm Step Covers
- 2 x 1500mm Step Covers
- 1.5 x 2000mm Step Covers
- 1 x 3000mm Step Cover
Guide & Tips
Whilst SuperGrip Lite Multi Purpose Step Covers are resilient to dirt and contaminants they will, as with most other things, become dirty. Dry dirt and debris can easily be removed using a stiff brush and should be carried out on a regular basis. If the step covers have been subjected to spillages or the dirt has become embedded, detergents can be used. It is always advisable to test any cleaning product on SuperGrip Lite Multi Purpose Step Covers before starting the cleaning procedure. Using the detergent, warm water and a suitable brush, scrub the effected areas until clean. The excess water can be removed using a wet/dry vacuum cleaner or suitable absolvable materials. Where circumstances allow, SuperGrip Lite Multi Purpose Step Covers can be power washed without causing harm. Care should be taken when the anti-slip step covers have been stuck down and / or edge sealed as very high-pressure power washing or repeated power washing could cause damage to sealants and adhesives.
General Routine Maintenance
The security of the fixings/adhesive should be checked on a regular basis. Circumstances will vary, based upon the volume of foot traffic etc. but, as a guide, monthly inspections would be advisable.
