    Economy and Speed


    Thermocoat W is an economical, water based intumescent paint system providing fire resistance to structural steel and cast iron for up to 120 minutes with a minimum number of coats. A compatible decorative overcoat system ensures the system will enhance the building’s architectural and design features.

    It is designed for use on larger projects, where our technical team can advise the exact amount of Thermocoat required, keeping costs down and making application easier.

    How it Works


    The heat of a fire triggers a catalytic reaction, causing the expansion of an insulating char layer up to 50 times the paint thickness. This layer keeps the steel below its critical temperature, thus maintaining the structural integrity of the building.

    Preparation and Pre-Treatment




    Specification


    • Dry Internal: Apply Thermocoat W in accordance with film thickness schedule supplied by Technical Department to acheive 30, 60, 90 or 120 minute protection.
    • Visible or occasional modest damp internal areas: Also apply 1 good coat Thermoguard Flame Retardant Topcoat (available in Gloss or Eggshell finishes).
    • Wet or External Under Cover: Apply 2nd coat Thermoguard Flame Retardant Topcoat (available in Gloss or Eggshell finishes).
    • Full External Exposure - Contact Technical Department.



    Application


    • Thermocoat W may be applied by brush, roller or airless spray. To achieve the best finish in the shortest time, spray application is recommended. Prior to application the contractor should contact the technical department and obtain an application schedule. To assist correct application in accordance with this schedule, a wet film gauge should be used, wet film gauges can be provided on request.
    • Maximum wet film thickness per brush coat – 800 microns
    • Maximum wet film thickness per spray coat – 1400 microns

    Question: 

    I have had two internal RHS ( circular columns) Max. 200mm dia. installed in my house (say 2.50 metres long each) and left exposed (i.e. semi industrial look!) As we wanted this look we have left them as black primed from the fabricator. The building inspector wants these fire painted to 30 minute resistance. What is the best fire paint to use under these circumstances and what finish can we paint over, as we wish to end up with a black and as smooth as possible look ! Also, need a certificate of the compliance. Surface area of max. 4 to 5 M2 to cover. I understand that we may need to apply a white fire paint which can be top coated over in black. Would prefer to brush apply the paints as exposed decorated walls and ceilings surrounding.

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: 

    5m of 193.7 CHS (Circular Hollow Section) with a minimum of 4mm wall thickness would give you approximately 3.1m² of surface area to paint. To achieve 30min protection you would require 8 litres of Zeroflame Aquasteel WB+ (assuming all internal, dry environment).

    Assuming the steel has already been primed with a suitable primer, Zeroflame Aquasteel WB+ can be applied directly over this as long as it is clean and sound (no flaking, rust spots, bare metal areas, etc.). Once applied, Zeroflame Aquasteel WB+ Finish should be applied in the colour of your choice.

    Hi, I have a galvanised steel lintel and post to protect to 30mins. Lintel is 3.9m length of 178x102x19 UB to be covered 1 side of the web and both flanges and post is 1.1m tall 120x120x5 SHS to be covered all sides. Could you say how much thermocoat we need and does rawlins supply any suitable primers in suitably small quantities? Are wet thickness gauges included or do we need to order these separately?     To suitably prepared and primed 178x102x19 UB and 120x120x5 SHS steel apply 600 microns WFT (Wet Film Thickness) of Thermoguard Thermocoat W to achieve 30min protection. The steel once protected with sufficient Thermocoat W must be top coated with 2 coats of Thermoguard Flame Retardant Topcoat assuming the steel is located externally (ensure no areas are horizontal and subject to ponding/standing water).

    To prepare your new, bare galvanised steel we would recommend Teamac Mordant Solution (T Wash) followed by Thermoguard High Build Metal Primer.

    Based on the lengths of your steels you would require 5lt of Teamac Mordant Solution (T Wash), 2.5lt of Thermoguard High Build Metal Primer, 5kg of Thermoguard Thermocoat W and 2.5lt of Thermoguard Flame Retardant Topcoat in your chosen colour and finish.

    In certain instances after extensive testing and approval by Thermoguard, Thermocoat W can be applied to steel with existing (non fire protection) paints to achieve 60 minute protection. To be able to advise whether the steels you have may be suitable, we would first need the following information;

    Steel and cast iron should be free from rust and millscale and primed with Thermoguard High Build Metal Primer to 75 microns DFT (or alternative good quality anti-corrosive primer compatible with intumescent paints) in accordance with manufacturers instructions. Treat galvanised surfaces with T Wash/Mordant Solution & prime with zinc phosphate or other suitable primer for steel.

    Question: 

    Our project involves repainting 50 metres of steel beams which are already coated in white eggshell finish intumescent paint to a 90 minute fire protection. We are to repaint these beams as the lease is finished and the offices have to be repainted, so it is more of a routine repaint rather than protecting vulnerable surfaces as the existing coating is intact. Nonetheless we are required to paint with 90 minute fire protection. So are 2 coats of Thermoguard W required with a top coat or can you advise ? I expect the beams are a standard 400 mm size.

    Thermoguard Flame Retardant Topcoat can be used to redecorate and Thermoguard would certify it maintains existing fire protection, whatever that may be. However a Fire Certificate can only be issued for 90 mins if Thermoguard assess and are able to find they can propose a method to apply Thermoguard Thermocoat W over what is left of existing basecoat after removal of overcoat, plus high spots or upper layer of existing intumescent via electric hand tool abrasion.

    Question: hi we are looking for a minimum 60 minute fire protection, to the bottom section only ( rest of steel is built in) of an exposed steel beam above the entrance to an integral car port. we have approx. 60mtrs x 400mm wide to protect thickness of bottom flange approx. 35mm.regardsjohn doody
    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: 

    To achieve 60min protection on your steel, apply Thermoguard Thermocoat W @ 450 microns WFT. Followed by (once dry) 2 coats of Thermoguard Flame Retardant Topcoat in Eggshell or Gloss finish in the desired RAL or BS colour.

    Steel must be clean, dry and well primed (no bare areas, rust or other paints/coatings present). Fire Certificate issued free of charge upon application, Wet Film Gauges supplied to measure as you go to ensure correct thickness is achieved.

    Materials required for this project are as follows;

    • 3 x 5kg of Thermoguard Thermocoat W
    • 1 x 5lt Thermoguard Flame Retardant Topcoat

    Notes:
    1. Un-primed steel sections must be primed with a suitable primer prior to the application of the intumescent paint.
    2. Existing paint systems should be stripped back to bare steel, cleaned and degreased etc. prior to re-priming.
    3. It is advised that you read and understand the relevant product data sheets before undertaking any projects.
    4. Please check that steel specifications are correct before placing orders.
    5. All of the above materials should be used in order to satisfy the project requirements.

    To provide any information in relation to coverage or film thickness required for Thermoguard Thermocoat W we first need to know some details of the steel requiring protection. Please contact our Technical Department on 0113 2455450 or [email protected]. Please provide us with as much of the following information as possible;

    • Level of fire protection required (i.e. 30, 60, 90min, etc.)
    • Each steel section dimension (i.e. 254x146x37 UB)
    • Quantity and length of each section (or overall meterage for each section)
    • Orientation (horizontal or vertical)
    • Number of sides to be painted (all sides, 3 sides, 1 flange, etc.)
    • Environment (internal, external, chemical exposure, etc.)

    Alternatively you can just forward us drawings, fabrication/cutting lists and we'll extract the information from them.

    How far will a 5kg of Thermoguard Thermocoat W paint in surface area? Can you paint this on wooden surfaces?

    Thermoguard Thermocoat W is for use on steel and the coverage is determined by the level of fire protection required (30min, 60min, etc.) and the size of the steels to be protected. If you require fire protection for wood see Thermoguard Timbercoat.
