Features & Benefits
Areas of Application
Sikaflex 290i DC is used exclusively for caulking joints in traditional timber decks for boat and yacht construction. This product is suitable for experienced professional users only. Test with actual substrates and conditions have to be performed to ensure adhesion and material compatibility.
Chemical Resistance
Sikaflex 290i DC offers long-term resistance to fresh water, seawater, and proprietary aqueous cleaning agents; temporarily resistant to fuels, mineral oils, vegetable and animal fats; not resistant to organic acids, concentrated mineral acids and caustic solutions or solvents. The above information is offered for general guidance only. Advice on specific applications will be given on request.
Surface Preparation
Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from grease, oil and dust. As a rule, the substrates must be prepared in accordance with the instructions given in the current Sika Pre-Treatment Chart for Marine Applications. Advice on specific applications is available from the Technical Service Department of Sika Industry.
Application
Cut off the tip of the nozzle to suit joint width and apply the sealant into the joint with a suitable hand operated or compressed-air gun, taking care to avoid air entrapment. The optimum temperature for substrate and sealant is between 15°C and 25°C.
Overpainting
It is generally not recommended that a finish such as a paint or varnish is applied to an exterior teak deck as these contain solvents or plasticisers that can adversely affect the cured Sikaflex 290i DC or the drying of the film. Varnishes or paints do not often exhibit the flexible characteristics of the caulk which could lead to unsightly cracks in the finish. Any paint or varnish used must be tested for compatibility by carrying out preliminary trials on the fully cured sealant. One pack paints or paints that dry by oxidation (oil or alkyd resin based) are generally not suitable for application over Sikaflex 290i DC and two pack paint systems are preferred.
