Question:

Hi there, I am constructing a timber garage and have been asked (for building warrant) to provide short duration fire resistance (30 minutes) to the inner face of the building. The garage is made from Slow grown spruce. Can you advise?? many thanks

Answer:

To assist you with a specification for Fire Protection we will require some more information.

  • Size of surface area to paint
  • Timber thickness
  • Type of Timber surface (i.e. T&G, feather edge / shiplap cladding, solid panels / sheets, etc.)
  • Use (i.e. floor, wall cladding, ceiling, etc.)
  • Clear or coloured coating required?
  • Bare or previously coated?

Question:

Hi, I have a hardwood frame that has never been painted before. Can I apply 2 coats of HW01 directly to the timber, and then apply 2 coats of a water based paint colour of our choice over the top. Will this give 30/60 minutes depending on the design of the frame. OR do I have to use the complete system, ie 1 x HWAP-WP, then 2 x HW01, the 1 x HW04, then 2 x Our top coat. Thanks in advance. Steve.

Answer:

Envirograf advise that Envirograf HW01 White Intumescent Coating can in certain instances be applied directly to timber and that Envirograf HW01 White Intumescent Coating can also be overcoated with a topcoat of your choice, however they advise to carry out sample areas first as there is potential compatibility issues that may occur. As a distributor of the product and from our experience of projects like this we would always recommend using Envirograf HWAP/WB Primer and Envirograf HW04/S Undercoat in conjunction with Envirograf HW01 White Intumescent Coating where possible.

Question:

Could you tell me if the Envirograf HW01 White Intumescent Coating can be over painted with ordinary paint please

Answer:

Envirograf have confirmed their HW01 White Intumescent Coating can be overcoated with a standard topcoat but they advise to carry out a small test area first to ensure compatibility between coats.

Question:

We are finishing a kitchen extension and have decided to line walls and ceilings with 12mm marine ply. Local building control have advised that ply must be treated with intumescent paint to achieve Class 0. The finish we are hoping to achieve is a 'whitewash' effect whereby the grain of the ply is still detectable through the treatment/finish. Could you offer any advice on the minimum coverage rate/number of coats with this product we would need to apply to achieve Class 0 on new plywood? Would we need to prime the ply before using this product and does it need a topcoat afterwards, thanks for all help

Answer:

To acheive this white wash effect on plywood whilst upgrading to BS Class 0 Surface Spread of Flame we would recommend Thermoguard Thermoproof Interior Fluid followed by Thermoguard Thermoproof Interior Sealer in 'White Low'.

Question:

Hi I have a basement kitchen in an HMO property. The ceiling is a mix of plasterboard and exposed wooden beams (the plasterboard inserted between beams). There is a requirement for 30 minute protection, and the beams were therefore treated with intumescant varnish some years ago. I now intend to paint entire ceiling (both plasterboard & beams) white, and want to make sure I use the correct intumescant paint to give the 30 minute protection. Any advice much appreciated, thank you.

Answer:

To upgrade the plasterboard areas we would recommend you use Envirograf's EP/CP coating.

Specification is as follows:

Once this has been applied you can go over both the previously upgraded timber and the plasterboard with a finishing coat of Envirograf HW Acrylic Top Coat applied at 10m² per litre to provide the white finish you desire. This will provide the 30 minute rating required assuming the timber previously upgraded has been carried out correctly and is still intact/valid.

Question:

Hi I am looking to upgrade doors in my holiday let to 30 minutes fire rated doors. Is there a minimum thickness for this to work as there is paneling in the middle of the doors which is alot thinner than the general frame of the door? Also i am looking at using Product Number: 42 HW01 to make them 30 minute fire rated doors along with suitable door seals will this do the job or do i also need another product. many thanks Ashley

Answer:

We would recommend Envirograf Door Upgrade Paint System and viewing Door Upgrading Technical Data from the Download section on this product page which should answer all your questions.

Question:

Hi please can you tell me if this paint can be used on varnished wood stairs?

Answer:

If coating over existing paint or varnish apply Envirograf HWAP/WB Primer first. Please note that this coating system cannot be used on any areas of the stairs that are trafficked, i.e. stair treads, hand rails, etc.

Question:

We have a specification requiring a ceiling to be painted with intumescent paint to be 1 hour fire protection for the room above what would you recomend

Answer:

If the ceiling in question is timber, we would require the following details to enable us to provide you with a specification and quotation;

  • Size of surface area to protect
  • Type of timber (i.e. pine, mdf, plywood, etc.)
  • Type of Timber surface (i.e. T&G, feather edge / shiplap cladding, solid panels / sheets, etc.)

If the ceiling is plasterboard/lath & plaster then please instead provide the following;

  • Bare or previously coated?

Question:

Hi I'm looking at updating my doors to 20 minute firedoors to comply with building regs for a loft conversion, Will the doors need to be stripped back to bare wood?,they are white gloss at the moment

Answer:

Envirograf Door Upgrade Paint System Packs allow users to upgrade solid wood/timber doors to up to 30 mins' fire resistance. Existing paints do not need to be removed assuming they are not a previous fire protection coating and are sound and well adhered.

questions Elisabeth Moyes  on 2018-09-09 09:58:48
Question:

Can you paint a colour over the fireproof paint?

Answer:

Envirograf state that once Envirograf HW01 White Intumescent Coating has been applied you can go over with a topcoat of your choice. They do however recommend you carry out a small test area first to ensure adhesion and compatibility.
