Duram NS5 Metcote Etch Primer is a high adhesion metal primer with excellent etching qualities. This quality metal primer is solvent based and contains acids and adhesion promoters that etch the metal surface ensuring excellent adhesion. NS5 Metcote Etch Primer is quick drying and can be topcoated with most paints within two hours of application.

Product Uses

• To prime a variety of metal surfaces before overcoating.
• As a primer for Duram NS8 Metal Topcoat, Duram Durabak, Duram 195 or Duram Durapond.

Surface Preparation

Ensure all substrates are thoroughly clean, sound, dry and free from any contaminants such as dirt, salt, rust, mill scale, algae and grease.

New metal:

• Abrade surface lightly and remove any surface rust or mill scale by sanding, wire brushing, with a chipping hammer, or sandblasting (sandblasting to SA2½ with a 40 to 50 profile gives the best results).
• Clean away sanding dust, grease and dirt with Duram NS2 Galvanized Iron Cleaner according to instructions.
• Rinse thoroughly with water until a water break-free surface is attained and allow to dry.

Aluminium and stainless steel:

• Abrade surface with 220 grit waterpaper using Duram Xylene or turpentine as a lubricant. Rinse with Duram Xylene or lacquer thinners and allow to dry.

Application

• Stir Duram NS5 Metcote Etch Primer well.
• Apply NS5 Metcote Etch Primer as soon as the substrate is dry.
• Apply thinly by brush, roller or spray.
• For conventional spray application, thin with lacquer thinners (approximately 20%) 16 - 20 secs (Ford Cup 4).
• Allow NS5 Metcote Etch Primer to dry completely before overcoating.
• Allow a minimum of 30 minutes to cure (at 25ºC).
• When used for exterior applications, NS5 Metcote Etch Primer must be overcoated within 3 days to prevent oxidation.

IMPORTANT: For optimal protection against corrosion, apply Duram NS4 Anti-Rust Coating according to instructions before applying the topcoat (especially for humid and coastal environments).
