Blackfriar Professional Heavy Duty Varnish is a two-pack varnish that protects and transforms floors and work surfaces with a tough, hard wearing and professional finish. Resists dilute acids and alkalis, grease and chemicals, making it ideal for use in sports halls, gymnasiums and on bar tops.
Preparation
Ensure surface to be varnished is clean, dry, sound and free from wax, polish, oil or any other contamination. If wax has been used clean the surface thoroughly with white spirit prior to sanding. Bare wood should be sanded to a smooth surface, always working with the grain. Sound, previously varnished surfaces should be lightly sanded to provide a key.
Existing varnished surfaces which are unsound or in poor condition can be stripped back to bare timber with Blackfriar Professional Paint and Varnish Remover. New concrete must be at least 6 months old prior to varnishing. Concrete must be clean, dry and free from any surface laitance (a weak dusty layer on new concrete) and any other surface contaminants such as oils, grease, dirt etc. prior to applying the varnish. Power floated concrete must be prepared by suitable means (mechanical or chemical) to ensure an open, porous, sandpaper texture is achieved prior to varnishing.
Mixing
Base and activator supplied in correct proportions. Add all activator to base container and mix thoroughly for at least 5 minutes until product is smooth and even. Allow to rest 5 minutes before using. DO NOT MIX PART UNITS. Badly activated or incorrectly mixed materials will affect performance and may cause early failure or discolouration. The mixed material has a usable pot life of 4 hours (20°C).
Application
The product may be applied by brush or roller. If applying by brush, apply evenly using light strokes following the grain of the wood. If rollering, use a short nap mohair roller. For best results 3 coats are recommended on new wood and 2 coats on previously varnished surfaces. Prior to application of the final coat or if the over coating time is exceeded, lightly abrade with fine glass paper working with the grain and remove dust. The varnish will appear cloudy when wet but will quickly dry to a clear finish. When applying to new or bare wood, thin the first coat with up to 10% water.
Limitations
Not suitable for use on floor tiles or plastic type materials, e.g. imitation wood. Do not apply directly to power floated concrete. New concrete should be allowed to dry for at least 6 months before varnishing. Do not use under cold (less than 10°C), damp or humid conditions. Do not wash the varnished surface for at least 3 days after application. If water is spilled on it during this period gently wipe off with a soft dry cloth.
Drying Time
Touch dry - 2 hours (20°C). Hard dry - 8 hours (20°C). Full cure - 3 days (20°C). Recoatable after 4 hours.
Clean Up
Remove as much product as possible from application equipment before washing with water. Do not empty into drains or water courses. Some local authorities have special facilities for the disposal of waste coatings.

Question: Can you use this product on a painted surface to provide a hardwearing suface I.e a bar area were glasses etc are in and out to prevent scuffs and scratches on the unit hope to hear back from yourselves thanks Emily
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Blackfriar Heavy Duty varnish should is fine to go over most previously painted surfaces. With it being a 2 pack it will be harder wearing than single pack paint products. We would advise giving the surface a good rub down with a fine grade of sandpaper to key up the surface then wiping with Methylated Spirits to remove all dust.
Apply 2 coats of the varnish following the application instructions carefully. Allow the varnish to cure fully for 7 days before subjecting the coating to any abrasion from glasses etc.
