Description

Blackfriar Exterior Water Seal is a silicone-based water repellent that stops moisture and damp penetrating in to your exterior walls. Providing excellent water-proofing protection, it can be used on all properties and on most surfaces. Ideal for exposed and porous walls that are subject to poor weather conditions.

Preparation

Ensure surface to be treated is clean, sound and firm, with any cracks filled. Do not use alkaline or acid detergents or cationic surfactants. Mould growth should be treated with Blackfriar Anti-Mould Solution and allowed to dry. It is advisable to wait 28 days before treating fresh masonry.

Application

Ensure the product is thoroughly shaken prior to use. Apply 1 coat liberally by brush, roller or low pressure spray until the surface is saturated. Apply from bottom of the wall and work upwards. It is normal for the product to run down the surface (up to 30 cm) - this will not be visible when it has dried. On very porous surfaces, a second coat is necessary as soon as the first coat has lost its glossy appearance.

Clean Up

Remove as much product from application equipment as possible before washing with white spirit. Do not empty into drains or water courses. Some local authorities have special facilities for the disposal of waste coatings.

Limitations

Do not use under cold (less than 5°C) conditions. Do not apply to wet or damp surfaces. Application onto damp surfaces will prevent full penetration into the surface. Not suitable for use on wood, metal or limestone.

Question:

Can I paint this on a rendered wall of my bungalow. And then paint the wall after. I live near the coast. The bungalow is solid wall construction with no cavity.

Answer:

No you couldn’t use it in this manner, it is designed to go onto bare masonry and be left as a clear sealer. Any of the Zinsser Masonry coatings would provide a waterproof/breathable finish to the rendered wall, i.e. Zinsser AllWeather Exterior Masonry Paint (Solvent Based) or Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Matt (Water Based) for example.

Question: Do you need to use a primer first
Answer:

No, this should be applied to suitably prepared bare surfaces such as brickwork, cement and mortar.
