Jotun Steelmaster 120SB is a one component solvent based acrylic thin film intumescent coating independently approved for fire protection of structural steel exposed to celulosic fire up to 120 minutes. It can be used as mid coat or finish coat in atmospheric environments and is suitable on approved primers on carbon steel and galvanised steel substrates.

  • Suitable for structural steel for internal or semi-exposed locations up to corrosivity category C4 (ISO 12944-2), with an approved topcoat

Please Note: SteelMaster 120SB can be exposed without topcoat for 6 months during construction phase, however whether topcoated or not, the coating must be protected from condensation, ponding/pooling water due to rainfall or running water, provided it has had appropriate drying prior to exposure. This also extends to snow and ice.

Description

It can be used as a mid coat or finish coat in atmospheric environments and is suitable on approved primers on carbon steel and galvanised steel substrates.

Application Notes


The product can be applied by:

Spray - Use airless spray

Brush - Recommended for stripe coating and small areas, care must be taken to achieve the specified dry film thickness.

  • All drying times have been measured at a wet film thickness of 1000 μm under controlled temperature and relative humidity below 85 %
  • Drying times can vary depending on environmental conditions such as air temperature, relative humidity, weather conditions, ventilation and also the number of coats, total dry film thickness applied, etc.
  • Refer to Application Guide for multi-coat application method



Topcoating

  • The recommended minimum overcoating interval of this product with approved acrylic topcoats is 24 hours and for other approved topcoats is 48 hours
  • The system should be dry to handle and coating thickness gauge should not leave an indentation on the coating
  • Drying time/overcoating interval may be extended if there is a drop in temperature or if multi-coat system is applied
  • Prior to application of topcoat, the applicator must ensure that the specified dry film thickness has been achieved
  • Surface (touch) dry: The state of drying when slight pressure with a finger does not leave an imprint or reveal tackiness
  • Dry to handle: Minimum time before the coated objects can be handled without physical damage
  • Dry to over coat, minimum: The recommended shortest time before the next coat can be applied



Important Notes


Pre-commissioning considerations

Off-site application:

  • During the following given operations, damage to the coating system can occur particularly between in-shop applications through to final erection on site
  • For transportation of the applied sections from the fabrication yard to the erection site, the complete system with approved topcoat must be applied
  • Systems must be allowed to hard dry and approved before movement to site

Handling

  • Coatings should be sufficiently dry before handling and members should be lifted at designated lifting points or by using lifting brackets where available
  • The use of appropriate lifting chains or slings to be considered to minimise damage to coated steel
  • Single lift should be used unless specially designed multi-lift cradles are available
  • It should be noted that the potential for damage increases with coating thickness, as does the difficulty of repair

Transportation

  • The loading of trailers should be carefully planned, with timber supports positioned, where possible, in uncoated contact areas (e.g. areas to receive bolted connections)
  • Where contact of supports with coated areas is unavoidable, members should be supported on their toes to minimise the contact area
  • Members which may fill with water should be prevented from doing so by the use of covers which will not react with the intumescent coating system, should they come into contact
  • Loads are best secured with the careful use of clean chains, and it is advised that loaders wear overshoes and where possible avoid walking on coated surfaces in order to minimise contamination

Storage

  • Where site storage is unavoidable, similar care should be taken in the handling and support of the coated steel using the same lifting and support points as those used in transportation
  • The steelwork must be stored off ground and under cover both at the application facility and once transported to site
  • Any temporary covers must allow ventilation to prevent a humid atmosphere building up around the steelwork
  • Once dried occasional condensation is acceptable, but this must not amount to ponding or running water
  • Protect from frost and snow
  • Storage areas should be roped off with signage clearly explaining the need to avoid contamination and mechanical damage to the coated steelwork

I have steels that I need to coat using the Jostun Fire Protective Coating. The area is approx. 115.2m² and the steel sections are to be coated on 3 sides and the are all of varying length. The average section is 254x146x37 UB

In order to answer this question we would need you to provide our technical team ([email protected]) with as much of the following information as possible;

  • Level of fire protection required (i.e. 30, 60, 90min, etc.)
  • Each steel section dimension (i.e. 254x146x37 UB)
  • Quantity and length of each section (or overall meterage for each section)
  • Orientation (horizontal or vertical)
  • Number of sides to be painted (all sides, 3 sides, 1 flange, etc.)
  • Environment (internal, external, car park, chemical exposure, etc.)
  • Application on site or in shop

Alternatively you can just forward us drawings, fabrication/cutting lists and we'll extract the information from them but in that instance we'd need some guidance as to what to allow for i.e. all steels on first floor, etc.
