Rawlins Paints’ 1002 Fire Retardant Varnish is a heat resistant and clear intumescent varnish for wood and timber, applied in two coats* to achieve Class 1, Class 0 and EN Class B s2 d0 Fire Protection on timber and timber derived substrates. Available in interior and exterior grades in matt, satin or gloss finishes, each pack protects 20m². A Certificate of Supply is available for each project.
The special fire resistant formula provides a tough, clear, durable finish to panelling, cladding and trim. This fireproof varnish has a clear finish which enhances the natural beauty of the substrate while creating a fire protection for new and prepared existing surfaces. The clear overcoat provides protection against UV and wear. The overcoat is produced in two versions:
- a water based interior grade available in a matt or satin finish;
- a solvent based exterior grade available in a matt, satin or gloss finish.
When exposed to fire, 1002 Fire Retardant Varnish expands to create an insulating barrier, protecting timber surfaces from flames, heat, and oxygen and suppressing emission of deadly smoke and gasses. This intumescent coating will provide effective fire protection.
A Certificate of Supply can be issued upon request for each correctly specified project for insurance, Fire and Building Control Authority and client records against proof of purchase. Fire performance is guaranteed if all instructions are followed correctly.
Each pack will cover 20m².

Technical Data Sheet & Application Notes
The first coat of the system is with 1002 Fire Retardant Varnish Basecoat, which is an easy 1:1 ratio two pack waterborne base coat which requires mixing before use. The second coat is with 1002 Fire Retardant Varnish Overcoat. The interior grade is water based and requires just 1 coat; the Exterior Grade is solvent based and requires 2 coats.
Both the basecoat and overcoat are included in each pack of 1002 Fire Retardant Varnish.
Each pack of 1002 Fire Retardant Varnish contains sufficient material to treat NO MORE than 20m² of flat timber area at the recommended coverage rates. If applied to a larger area, the degree of fire protection intended will not be achieved and subsequent adhesion problems may be encountered.

PAUL STAKER from medstead (uk) - 15/11/16
Furniture made from solid, bare timber requiring BS Class 1, Class 0 and EN Class B Surface Spread of Flame protection we normally recommend 1001 Fire Retardant Treatment as this soaks into the wood so cannot be worn off by constant use.
Hello, a couple of months ago we applied this product to a timber ceiling. A few 'dry' looking patches have started to appear. Can we apply another product like Danish Oil on top of the fire retardant? Thanks, Carl Baldwin
Carl from Halesworth (UK) - 29/09/16
'Dry' patches would only be present on a system like 1002 Fire Retardant Varnish due to under application. We would assume these areas have been missed or only a very thin coat applied, to rectify clean and sand the area and re-apply the 1002 Fire Retardant Varnish system to these areas. DO NOT under any circumstances apply Danish Oil.
We have 15 2 metre by 1 metre wooden honour boards at the grammar school we need to have fire protected. The boards themselves are varnished/stained and have been sign written. What product do you you recommend we use?
Richard Mountain from Colchester (UK) - 03/06/16
Bollom Intulac Ultra system can be applied over existing varnish (a maximum of four, single, well-adhered coats). This is a simple, clear 3 coat system to upgrade surfaces to British Standard Class 0 Surface Spread of Flame.
How do you remove old fire retardant paint from wood?
Britton from York (North Yorkshire) - 04/03/16
We recommend using 1402 Pro Coating Remover to remove existing fire retardant coatings.
How much 1002 Fire Retardant Varnish do i need to cover 9 internal doors (exposed pine - reclaimed), will 1 pack be enough?
nick from london (uk) - 15/10/15
1 x 20m² pack of 1002 Fire Retardant Varnish would be sufficient to coat 1 side of all 9 doors, but this will only upgrade them to BS Class 1/0. If you are trying to turn your doors in to 30min fire doors then you need to use our Fire Door Varnish (30min), each pack will upgrade 4 door sides.
