    Description

We no longer stock this product, but can recommend Sherwin Williams Zinc Clad IV EU as a great alternative.

Zinc Clad IV 80% by Sherwin-Williams is a two-component, polyamide epoxy, zinc rich coating. It has a low VOC level and contains 80% by weight of zinc dust pigment in its direct film. It meets SSPC Paint Specification #20 for zinc-rich organic primers.

    Features

    • 80% zinc content in dry film
    • Provides cathodic protection
    • Damaged film exhibits “self-healing” properties

    Recommended Uses

For use over properly prepared blasted steel.

    • Application to blasted steel surfaces.
    • Areas exposed to fresh and salt water.
    • Areas exposed to brackish water.
    • Areas exposed to chemical fumes.
    • Topcoating is recommended for maximum protection.

    Surface Preparation

Surface must be clean, dry, and in sound condition. Remove all oil, dust, grease, dirt, loose rust, and other foreign material to ensure adequate adhesion.

Zinc rich coatings require direct contact between the zinc pigment in the coating and the metal substrate for optimum performance.

    Iron & Steel (atmospheric service)

Remove all oil and grease from surface by Solvent Cleaning per SSPC-SP1. Minimum surface preparation is Commercial Blast Cleaning per EN ISO 8501-1 2007 Sa2, SSPC-SP6/NACE 3. For better performance, use Near White Metal Blast Cleaning per EN ISO 8501-1 2007 Sa21⁄2, SSPC-SP10/NACE 2. Blast clean all surfaces using a sharp, angular abrasive for optimum surface profile 50 microns (2 mils ). Coat any bare steel the same day as it is cleaned or before flash rusting occurs. For SSPC-SP12/NACE 5, all surfaces to be coated shall be cleaned in accordance with WJ-2L standards. Pre-existing profile should be approximately 50 microns (2 mils). Light rust bloom is allowed.

    Galvanized Steel

Allow to weather a minimum of six months prior to coating. Solvent Clean per SSPC-SP1 (recommended solvent is VM&P Naphtha). When weathering is not possible, or the surface has been treated with chromates or silicates, first Solvent Clean per SSPC-SP1 and apply a test patch. Allow paint to dry at least one week before testing adhesion. If adhesion is poor, brush blasting per SSPC- SP7 is necessary to remove these treatments. Rusty galvanizing requires a minimum of Hand Tool Cleaning per SSPC-SP2, prime the area the same day as cleaned or before flash rusting occurs.

    Weathered Zinc-Rich Primer

Remove zinc salts by either high pressure water washing and scrubbing with stiff bristle brush or sweep blast followed by water flush. Allow to dry.

Note: If blast cleaning with steel media is used, an appropriate amount of steel grit blast media may be incorporated into the work mix to render a dense, angular 38-75 micron (1.5-3.0 mil) surface profile, per Keane-Tator Surface Profile Comparator. A profile up to 100 microns (4 mils) is acceptable, however, coating must be applied to achieve a minimum of 75 microns (3 mils) dft. This method may result in improved adhesion and performance.

    Application Equipment

The following is a guide. Changes in pressures and tip sizes may be needed for proper spray characteristics. Always purge spray equipment before use with listed reducer. Any reduction must be compliant with existing VOC regulations and compatible with the existing environmental and application conditions.

    Thinning/Clean Up: No 13

    Airless Spray
(use Teflon packings and continuous agitation)
    Pressure: 2000 - 2300 psi
    Hose: 3/8” ID
    Tip: 19 thou (0.48mm)
    Filter: none
Thinning: As needed up to 5% by volume

    Conventional Spray
    (continuous agitation required)
    Gun: Binks 95
    Fluid Nozzle: 68
    Air Nozzle: 68P
    Atomization Pressure: 50 psi
    Fluid Pressure: 10 - 20 psi
Thinning: As needed up to 5% by volume

Keep pressure pot at level of applicator to avoid blocking of fluid line due to weight of material. Blow back coating in fluid line at intermit- tent shutdowns, but continue agitation at pressure pot.

    Brush
Small areas only; natural bristle. Thinning is not recommended.

If specific application equipment is not listed above, equivalent equipment may be substituted.

questions Eduardo Rodriguez on 2019-07-25 04:01:49
    Question:

Does the zinc clad iv can be coated when previous coat is zinc clad ii, for repairs and welds?

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

An Organic Zinc (Sherwin-Williams Zinc Clad IV 80% or Sherwin-Williams Zinc Clad IV 85%) can be used to repair an Inorganic Zinc Silicate (Sherwin-Williams Zinc Clad II EU) when that Inorganic Zinc Silicate has been damaged back to bare steel.

Just ensure, the bare steel is prepared correctly. Existing intact Inorganic Zinc Silicate is feathered back to a firm edge and that salt levels are of an acceptable level with minimum overlap of Organic onto Inorganic.

    questions Jim on 2019-01-02 14:57:06
    Question:

Hi we need to paint our steel frame with intumescent paint. The architect has specified the colour black, is this available?

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Intumescent paints for steel generally come in white only and cannot be left as a finish, so the usual process would be to ensure the steelwork is prepared, primed (with a compatible primer), coated with the intumescent paint in white and then finished with a compatible topcoat in the colour and finish of your choice.

    To enable us to provide a more detailed specification for your project, please provide us with as much of the following information as possible;

    - Level of fire protection required (i.e. 30, 60, 90min, etc.)
    - Each steel section dimension (i.e. 254x146x37 UB)
    - Quantity and length of each section (or overall meterage for each section)
    - Orientation (horizontal or vertical)
    - Number of sides to be painted (all sides, 3 sides, 1 flange, etc.)
    - Environment (internal, external, car park, chemical exposure, etc.)
    - Application on site or in shop

Alternatively you can just forward us drawings, fabrication/cutting lists and we'll extract the information from them but in that instance we'd need some guidance as to what to allow for i.e. all steels on first floor, etc.
