    Question:

Hi is this paint suitable for a limestone fire surround, if so would I need to prime or sugar soap and how many coats would indeed and would it need a finishing coat .would it be better with a brush or a roller .

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

While limestone is not listed as a substrate, it can be applied to similar porous substrates such as brick and plaster.

We would recommend to test on a small area for compatibility and adhesion prior to full application.

Two coats should be applied, the first coat should be left 12 hours prior to the second coat being applied.

This product should not be applied by roller.

    Question:

Can this paint be used on a metal surround of a gas fire?

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

This product is not suitable for this type of application.

It can be applied to concrete, lime, lime cement, cement plaster, sandlime brick and brick surfaces as well as mineral board surfaces.

    Question:

Can you use this produce on a firewall at the back of a stove and can you deliver to Ireland ?

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Assuming the firewall is made of brick, concrete or lime/lime cement, it is bare, clean, dry, sound and prepared in accordance with the technical data sheet, you could consider this product.

Dependent on the colour you select, the heat resistance will vary, Ready Mixed White will offer heat resistance up to 300℃, and tinted colour options up to 180℃.

Unfortunately, we are currently only able to deliver to Mainland UK, our full delivery terms can be found here; https://www.rawlinspaints.com/content/delivery-terms-pricing

    Question:

Can this paint be used on a marble surround of a gas fire?

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Unfortunately no, this is not suitable for application to marble.

As an alternative you could consider Stonelux Primer & Undercoat followed by Stonelux Fireplace Paint.

The marble fire surround must be clean, dry, sound, prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet, with any surfaces to be painted a minimum of 10cm away from the heat source and not subject to direct flame contact.

This performs upto temperatures of 300°C and is available in many colours in a range of stone finishes.

    Question:

I'd like to paint the old discoloured terracotta tiles in fireplace hearth before a wood burner is installed. Is this paint suitable? Do you do colour swatches? is the M497 grey its hard to tell

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Unfortunately no, this is not suitable for application to terracotta tiles.

Assuming the tiles are not exposed to direct flame contact, they are ceramic tiles, they are clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we can recommend Stonelux Primer & Undercoat followed by Stonelux Fireplace Paint.

Stonelux Colour Sample Pots and Stonelux Colour Chart are available.

    Question:

Hi- I’m looking to purchase a high heat white paint for my concrete fireplace hearth. What do you recommend? Thanks.

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Assuming the concrete hearth is not exposed to direct flame contact, it is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet Tikkurila Muuri can be used.

In white this can withstand 300°C and 180°C for the tinted colours.

    Question:

I have already started using this paint on a resin fireplace surround. Why isn’t it suitable? What paint would you recommend for this please?

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Unfortunately resin is not a compatible substrate for this product.

This product can withstand temperatures of upto 300°C but it does not isolate the substrate it is applied to from those temperatures.

Assuming the resin fireplace is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet you could consider Stonelux Primer & Undercoat followed by Stonelux Fireplace Paint.

Surfaces painted with Stonelux Fireplace Paint must be a minimum of 100mm (10cm) away from any heat source.

This paint can withstand upto 300°C.

    questions Steve on 2022-07-26 20:05:28
    Question:

I am refurbishing a 90 year old fireplace opening and chimney breast. The opening will house a typical stove with >100mm clearance. My current plan is to clean the brick and paint with a suitable fireplace paint, There are a few areas when the bricks (hard clay) are heavily contaminated with soot. With considerable effort, the baked-on soot can be removed from the brick surface. However, even when very thoroughly cleaned, it is clear smoke contaminants have soaked into the brick. I am unsure whether this contamination could cause staining of a painted finish over time or adhesion issues during application. I assume my situation is not unique. Is there relevant guidance for either TIKKURILA MUURI or STONELUX paints?

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Soot can be very difficult to clean in Tikkkurila's experience and whilst an alkaline cleaning agent such as Tikkurila Maalipesu Cleaning Agent may help it will all depend on how contaminated the surfaces are and what type of fuels/combination of fuels have been burnt over the last 90 years or so.

You have correctly pointed out that any remaining soot could cause issues for the paint system and possibly discolouration/bleed through, but until the work is done it will be difficult to know what effect, if any the remaining contamination will have.

I guess the only advice is to clean the surfaces as best as possible and then paint a small trial area, leave for a sensible period to establish if there is any noticeable problem with adhesion, discolouration, or bleeding.

The alternative is to just clean and leave the surface un-treated/natural.

    Question:

HI, is this product suitable for painting direct onto fireboard that is what makes up the bay that my log burner is set into? Thank you.

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

This is suitable for use on concrete, lime, lime cement, cement plaster, sandlime brick and brick surfaces as well as mineral board surfaces.

The product can be thinned upto 10% with clean water if necessary.

After the primer coat has set for at least 12 hours, finishing coat should be applied.

    Question:

Hi, is this suitable for the wooden part of the fire surround rather than the walls? Thanks

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Unfortunately no this is not suitable for application to wood.

Assuming the wood is bare, clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we can recommend Stonelux Primer & Undercoat followed by Stonelux Fireplace paint.

This is available in a range of colours in various stone finishes.

Surfaces painted with Stonelux Fireplace Paint must be a minimum of 100mm (10cm) away from any heat source.

Hi, i need a paint that is fire and heat resistant for my small marble hearth in a grey...Which one would you recommend? Thank you

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Unfortunately this is not suitable for application to marble.

Assuming the marble hearth to be painted is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet and is 10cm away from any heat source, not exposed to temperatures over 300°C we can recommend Stonelux Fireplace Paint.

This is available in a range of colours and finishes.
