Alkyd Primer
Jotun Alkydprimer can be used as a primer or mid coat in marine and atmospheric environments. This alkyd coating is generally used for touch-up work and small scale purposes within the marine industry and will also act as a protective coating for a wide range of industrial structures - carbon steel and aluminium.
Please download the attached datasheet for more technical information, including further application specifications, drying and curing times, heat resistance and product compatibility.
When applying this alkyd primer, the surface should always be clean, dry and free-from loose materials and contamination. General surface preparation guidelines are included in the datasheet for wood, carbon steel and aluminium.

![]() | Question:
I'm painting my boat hull, top part not antifoul, and like the look of the Jotun Pilot2 gloss. Is this suitable? What primer should I use, if it is? The boat is GRP and it will be it's first coat of paint over the original gel coat. Also, the existing antifoul is a bit flakey. I've removed all the loose paint but is it worth using a primer on this too, if there's one suitable for both the top and bottom of the hull? One pack if possible. |
Answer:
No, for application to the existing gelcoat above the water line assuming it is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we would recommend 1 coat of Jotun Penguard HB followed by 1 coat of either of the following topcoats depending on the sheen you require. Jotun Hardtop XP or Jotun Hardtop Flexi or Jotun Hardtop AX. For the areas below the water line, they should be cleaned with a pressure washer prior to preparation then application of 3 brush coats of Jotun Penguard HB followed by 1 roller coat of Jotun Vinyguard Silvergrey 88 then 2 brush coats of Jotun Mare Nostrum SP..
![]() | Question: I am looking for primer for aluminium below the waterline, under antifouling coat. Is this suitable? Jus to touch in on existing bare patches, not to coat a new surface. |
Answer: The primer we recommend for prepared aluminium (cleaned and lightly abraded), which can then be overcoated with antifouling paint is Jotun Safeguard Universal ES however this product is only available in 18L drums.
