Carboline Carboguard 553 is a two-component, water-based epoxy primer that is easy to apply and has very good chemical resistance.
Carboline Carboguard 553 is a two-component, water-based epoxy primer that is easy to apply and has very good chemical resistance.
This primer demonstrates increased film hardness and durability in comparison to straight acrylic or acrylic-epoxy systems. This straight epoxy formula is more chemical and abrasion resistant than most water-based epoxies, which translates into superior performance and longer service life
It is an outstanding corrosion resistant primer for steel or concrete substrates where a typical epoxy cannot be used due to odour or VOC requirements. It has superior performance properties over more typical acrylic-modified epoxies.

These times are based on a 75 micron dry film thickness and 40-60% relative humidity. Higher film thicknesses, insufficient ventilation, high humidity or cooler temperatures will require longer cure times.
Recoat intervals may vary from those listed above when using under intumescent fireproofing products. Consult Rawlins for recommended cure times before applying Carboline intumescent products.
Surface Preparation
General
Surfaces must be clean and dry
Employ adequate methods to remove dirt, dust, oil, and all other contaminants that could interfere with adhesion of the coating
Steel
SSPC-SP6 with a 25-50 micron surface profile
When using under fireproofing products, defer to the primer surface preparation requirements in the product data sheet of the fireproofing product
Concrete or CMU
Concrete shall be designed, placed, cured, and prepared per NACE No. 6/SSPC-SP 13, latest edition
Abrade to remove all laitance, loose concrete, etc. and to create surface profile in accordance with the appropriate ICRI CSP standard for the coating system
