Abrade & degrease unweathered plastisol & powder coatings.

Allow new plaster/cement & stucco to cure 60-90 days before coating.

Thoroughly degrease new galvanised steel.

questions Joanne on 2020-07-07 16:51:37
Question:

Hi, what paint would you recommend for painting wooden decking/walkway? Solvent or water based? Thank you.

Answer:

Assuming the timber decking is clean, dry and sound we can recommend Bradite Floor-it. This is available in many RAL and BS colours in a semi-gloss finish. Please check the Technical Data Sheet for substrate and priemr requirements.

questions Kevin Webb on 2020-04-20 09:16:21
Question:

Hi is this ok for a garage door ?

Answer:

Assuming the door is previously coated and in sound condition then yes. Unless the ambient temperature during application is under 10°c we would usualy recommend the water based version, Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based).

questions west on 2020-02-12 15:01:50
Question:

im looking to paint my upvc front door using your Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Solvent Based) do you do them in tester pots so I can choose a colour??

Answer:

We don't I'm afraid, this is available in RAL and BS colours which are a standardised colour range.

questions Janet on 2019-10-30 02:36:52
Question:

Hello, I just need to ask your advice please.... I would like to paint my composite front door (it's presently black and I'd like to change it to a grey shade)... However it's a really cold time of year and due to this I'm uncertain if I should use the Allcoat Exterior Satin Solvent Based or Water Based paint? ... Could you please help?

Answer:

Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Solvent Based) would be the recommendation for low temperature application. Apply when air and surface temperatures are above 5°C and humidity is less than 80%.

questions Lorraine Elliott-Morrow on 2019-10-07 16:06:28
Question:

What's the best paint for white upvc windows? The windows are smooth, does it leave brush marks in the finish when dry? I'm looming to paint them either anthracite grey or a lighter grey. Thank oth

Answer:

Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based) is our preferred choice for uPVC, for more details on painting uPVC you can read our blog post How to Paint uPVC Windows and Doors.

Question:

Good morning, can you match a colour for me that's not on your chart. I am painting white upvc windows. Thank you.

Answer:

Yes, please post a sample of the colour you want matching to;

Rawlins Paints, FAO Technical Team, Northspeed House, Moorview, Holbeck, Leeds, LS11 9NF.

Alternatively if you know the colour code for the colour but it is not listed on our website for this product give us a call as we may already have a match.

questions Linda Hallifax on 2019-06-27 19:58:41
Question:

What would you recommend for re-painting a fibreglass outdoor sculpture when the previous paint is flaking off? Some areas are bare fibreglass now

Answer:

Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based) would be fine for the this. (There is a chance the solvents in the solvent based grade could attack the old paint coating).

Rub down to remove the loose flaking paint back to a sound surface, wash thoroughly to remove all dirt etc. then apply 2 coats of Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based) in your chosen colour.

questions Adam on 2019-04-06 14:58:35
Question:

Hi, hope you are having a good day. Would Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Solvent Based), be the best product for a window sill which has plant pots which are occasionally moist/ damp , the water based paint keeps peeling in rings. Looking for the best waterproof, scratch resistant product? Many thanks

Answer:

We would recommend applying something more durable than a single pack for your application in way of Rust-O-Thane 9200 Handy Pack

questions Peter on 2019-03-29 06:35:00
Question:

Hello, What paint product would work best on old wooden windows, subjected to harsh weathering ie. direct sun/directional rain? Some areas are back to bare wood, some of which is resinous. There are areas of existing sound paint to be overcoated. Many thanks.

Answer:

Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Water Based or Solvent Based could be used here. After preparation, prime bare areas of timber with Zinsser Cover Stain. Existing paint should be sound and well adhered, remove anything loose and flaking, clean thoroughly and abrade to provide a key. Then apply 2-3 coats as required of either AllCoat Exterior product in the desired colour and finish.

questions Annabel on 2019-02-25 21:24:35
Question:

I am repainting our porch, which is a mixture of timber and metal window frames (no door). Would you recommend the water based or solvent based Zinsser all coat exterior satin?

Answer:

If painting is to be done when temperatures are low, i.e. below 10°C then the solvent grade must be used. If it is warmer than 10°C then the water based version can be used. Note that the water based product is easier to apply and is Zinsser's preferred product so if you hold on until spring this would be the better option.

questions Russell on 2019-02-20 14:16:57
Question:

Hi I want to paint our Composite front door Black Satin. I’ve chosen the All Coat Exterior Satin Solvent based. Would this be the correct paint. Something tells me no. Many thanks..

Answer:

Where possible we would instead recommend the use of Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based).

questions John Ross on 2019-02-09 16:18:42
Question:

Not sure if question already sent. Want to change 8 upvc interior windows + 1 french door in our conservatory from brown to satin white, would appreciate any advise, plan to spray. Regards JohnRoss

Answer:

What you plan to do is fine but where possible we recommend using Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based) instead due to better performance/application directly onto uPVC.

questions Mike Moran on 2019-01-17 21:33:05
Question:

I want to date my UPVC white window frames, probably dark grey/black. Your helpful website suggests Zinisser Exterior wAter based,2 coats applied in summer.Correct ? if we did it with first coat gloss and then preferred sAtin, Could we just use satin for the second coat or would it still need 2 coats satin ? Would 3 coats last longer ? Some high windows and don’t want to re scaffold-prefer to ensure it lasts. Any good feedback for this paint on UPVC window frames please ? Thanks a lot. Mike

Answer:

We would always suggest the water based grade of Zinsser AllCoat Exterior where possible for uPVC. If you use the gloss for the first coat and decide you prefer satin, the water based satin can be applied over the gloss. 2 coats will give a good level of performance on vertical surfaces, any horizontal surfaces could be given 3 coats to give the best level of performance.

questions Phil on 2018-12-15 15:29:50
Question:

What system do you recommend for painting exterior timber window frames; currently painted with sound solvent-based gloss? I've read conflicting opinions on whether solvent or water based allcoat should be used, both requiring or not requiring 123 primer to ensure adhesion to the glass.

Answer:

If you have to do the job during winter then Zinsser AllCoat Exterior (Solvent Based) must be used. If you can wait until warmer weather then Zinsser AllCoat Exterior (Water Based) would be suitable (this would be the preferred option as the timber will be drier). When using the Zinsser AllCoat Exterior (Water Based) prime surfaces first with Zinsser Cover Stain to get adhesion to glass, this is the best primer in our range for glass. If using the Zinsser AllCoat Exterior (Solvent Based), do not prime with Zinsser Cover Stain, the solvent grade of AllCoat Exterior will adhere reasonably well to the glass on its own. Just make sure the timber is completely dry before painting.

questions Gaz on 2018-08-11 08:53:42
Question:

Currently have a uPVC composite door in a deep red colour. We are looking to paint this grey, would zinsser allcoat product be suitable and if so would solvent version be recommended over water based version. Finally would I need to use a coat of bullseye 123 primer first or is the allcoat product self priming? Many thanks

Answer:

We would instead recommend the Zinsser AllCoat Exterior (Water Based) for this. It is self priming onto this type of surface, 2-3 coats in a grey colour should cover a dark red door.

questions Lesley Adshead on 2018-08-10 14:05:38
Question:

Hi I am wanting to spruce up my aluminium framed greenhouse and want to find a suitable primer and paint in a grey shade to go with the rest of my newly refurbished garden colour scheme. Can you please advise me which product will be best to be used, as it all seems to be a little contradictory on different sites. Am I right in thinking after the frame work has been cleaned down - and dry to use an etch primer to ensure it adheres to the aluminium - then what paint would I need to use as a top coat ? Any help or advice you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Kind regards Lesley Adshead.

Answer:

We would instead recommend the Zinsser AllCoat Exterior (Water Based) for this. It is easier to use than the solvent grade and gives the same level of performance. An etch primer is not required, the AllCoat will stick well on its own.

Answer:

questions Neil Bould  on 2018-06-28 14:35:12
Question:

I want to a smooth Shiplap shed& upvc windows & doors dark grey? Slate grey what do I use?? And where are you based?? Leeds? If so I'm not too far away to collect Regards Neil

Answer:

One of the Zinsser AllCoat Exterior products would be an excellent choice to paint both of these substrates but we would recommend one of the water based finishes in the summer months rather than the solvent based. We are based in Leeds and have a Trade Counter you can collect from at LS11 9NF.

questions Heather Pierpoint  on 2018-04-09 09:53:01
Question:

I need to paint exterior windows and doors that are currently painted in a hard finished stain/varnish. The wood is in excellent condition, as is the finish. Which products would you recommend? Do I need to prime with Coverstain first. I is subject to the elements because of the location of the property.

Answer:

We would recommend priming first with Zinsser Cover Stain, make sure the timber is dry especially sills which can pick up moisture if the existing coating has cracked (moisture level must be below 12%).

One of the Zinsser AllCoat Exterior (Water Based) range would be our preference for the top coat as they are easier to work with and just as high level of performance.

questions Judy Conway on 2018-03-16 19:05:44
Question:

Can this product be mixed to any colour I require? We have a wooden chalet right on the coast and it is subject to being battered by the wind and rain, salt and extreme sun. Will this product withstand these conditions? I am hoping to get the chalet repainted again due to the front cracking and fading. your product is solvent based is that the same as an oil based paint? My decorator does not think that a water based paint would withstand the conditions that are thrown at the chalet. I look forward to your feedback.

Answer:

The Water Based Zinsser AllCoat Exterior range will give a better level of performance in this environment, it is more flexible than the solvent based product meaning it will move with the expansion and contraction of the timber without cracking. Provided the surface is thoroughly prepared and the timber is completely dry the product will give a very good level of performance in these conditions. Please note the Satin and Gloss Zinsser AllCoat Exterior (Water Based) versions will have slightly higher performance than the matt for this situation, i.e. exterior timber, the matt is designed more for masonry surfaces.

All products can be mixed to any RAL, BS and NCS colour by us and many more if you require a specific colour matching.

questions Leah on 2018-02-12 17:19:52
Question:

I would like to paint a upvc front door with this. Would I need to do anything tp the door before usinv this paint.

Answer:

We would recommend you use the water based Zinsser AllCoat Exterior products for this application. AllCoat Exterior water based products can be applied directly to these items with no primer required. If any areas are new uPVC new we would advise abrading the surfaces with a fine grade of sandpaper followed by a solvent wipe using methylated spirits. Then apply 2 coats of the AllCoat Exterior water based when weather permits.

questions Gaz on 2018-01-16 18:37:26
Question: Was thinking of spraying this Can u add something to make it dry faster?
Answer:

Application by spray should be done with airless spray, use tip 0.13 - 0.017 at pressure 1800 – 2400 psi. There is nothing you can add to speed up the drying, it is best to apply 2 thin coats as these will dry much quicker than a heavy coating.

Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Solvent Based) is designed specifically for use in cooler conditions so it will dry OK even at lower temperatures.

Note: You can only use liquid driers in solvent based alkyd paints, Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Solvent Based) is not an alkyd formula, therefore driers would not be compatible.

questions JEM on 2017-09-22 09:20:16
Question: Hi, should I use a primer and undercoat as this is a brand new solid wood front door? Also, how many coats would you recommend? thanks
Answer:

We would recommend 1 coat of Zinsser Cover Stain followed by 2 coats of Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Water Based).

questions Stephanie Axon  on 2017-08-11 15:57:54
Question: Would I need to use primer and undercoat with the solvent based exterior satin on previously painted wood which has been cleaned, sanded and filled as required? Many thanks
Answer:

No, after this preparation you should just be able to apply the Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Solvent Based) directly.

Question: Would this be suitable for use on mdf wall panelling in the bathroom? The area does get wet occasionally.
Answer:

Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin (Solvent Based) wouldn't be suitable for this application. Instead we would recommend 1 coat of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 followed by 2 coats of Zinsser Perma-White Interior.
