Painting over old or heavily decorated wallpaper can be problematic. In older builds, residential homes, public houses, hotels, bed and breakfasts, etc. the downtime and problems involved with stripping off wallpaper completely can be time consuming and re-open surface problems the wallpaper may be covering and protecting – such as dark surface colour from a legacy paint job, uneven surfaces or graffiti. In situations like this, many property owners, project and general managers choose to paint over the wallpaper. This can also be difficult, but with the right Zinsser product, almost any decorative maintenance work can be successfully completed.
Zinsser Wallpaper Cover-Up is an all-in-one primer, sealer & stain block with high hiding power that obliterates wallpaper print with a smooth matt, off-white finish. For time-saving and money-saving purposes, it is the smart way to paint over wallpaper. Wallpaper can be problematic to paint over, due to adhesion issues. Staining, or direct application of normal emulsions can create bubbles or blisters on the wallpaper. Zinsser Wallpaper Cover-Up can be applied directly to wallpaper to protect it from the moisture of emulsion, and in just one coat it easily creates a new, well adhered surface with stain blocking properties that can be painted over the same day! Transform any wallpapered surface with minimal downtime.
For best results, ensure surface is smooth, clean, dry and free from any surface contaminants. Wallpaper must be well adhered to the surface.
Stir thoroughly before use. Apply when temperature is between 10-30°C to ensure proper drying. Best results are achieved by roller application – Use a short pile (up to 5mm) mohair or microfibre roller. Apply evenly and avoid overspreading. If applying by brush, load generously and avoid overspreading. For very dark wallpapers or those which have a contrasting print, obliteration can be improved by using a ‘wet on wet’ roller technique. 15-30 minutes after application, roll over the applied surface again using a lightly loaded roller.
- For best results, limit brush application to ‘cutting in’.
- Avoid using a heavy pile roller – short pile gives a smoother, more even finish.
- Ensure application area is well ventilated to facilitate drying.
Please note: Errors and omissions excepted (E&OE). It is your responsibility to read all data sheets (available upon request) prior to application. Can you use this to cover woodchip paper
Zinsser Wallpaper Cover-Up would be fine for this. Wallpaper must be clean, sound and well adhered, apart from that it should go straight on. You can then overpaint using a coloured emulsion.
Note: Zinsser Wallpaper Cover-Up is not a high build product therefore it will not disguise the wood chip feature, this will still show through the paint coatings.

I want to cover both wallpaper and wood paneling. Can I use this on interior wood paneling?
Assuming the panelling has been painted and there are no knots showing then yes Zinsser Wallpaper Cover-Up can be applied. If the panelling is varnished or bare timber, the knots will need to be sealed first with Zinsser B-I-N then the Wallpaper Cover-Up applied.

Question: Will this work on covering over vinyl wallpaper?
Zinsser Wallpaper Cover-Up is fine on vinyl wallpaper, just the usual criteria, i.e. ensure surface is smooth, clean, dry and free from any surface contaminants. Wallpaper must be well adhered to the surface, etc. See the product data sheets in the 'DATASHEETS' tab for more information.

Question: Can this product be used on any surface example wood as a primer?
Zinsser Wallpaper Cover-Up can be used on all types of timber as a primer BUT interior wood surfaces only. Even with a good top coat on we would not advise using it for any external applications.
