For the interior decoration of walls and ceilings in listed buildings, heritage properties, traditional, period and historic buildings - including churches, chapels and castles – Roman and Turkish baths, along with other popular restored building tourist attractions, Zinsser Grade 1 is the perfect high-performance paint that acts as a primer, sealer and finish coat in one, available in 3,000+ colours, inc. RAL, RAL Design, BS, NCS & the new NCS 2050 colours. Designed to deliver the exact requirements involved with historical renovation and refurbishment projects, Grade 1 will trap and contain any moisture problems from the substrate build, which are causing the current finish to flake and crack. It requires no washing down of surfaces and no additional primer or sealer, and is recoatable in two hours. Thanks to its vapour permeable film, the underlying substrate can breathe, and any damp that is in the brick, stone or masonry can naturally evaporate, without condensation, damp or mildew problems to the topcoat finish.
Listed building will have specific decorating requirements, and many types of solvent-based, high VOC paints and coatings may not be permissible to use. Grade 1 is an odourless, solvent-based solution to this problem. Precise colour schemes may also be required, and legacy fungal degradation have often caused problems that need treating during the redecoration stages. For a sole product that can be used on plaster, concrete, mortar, chalky materials, distemper, limewash and whitewash: on walls, ceilings, doors, trims, windows and cabinetry, project and estate managers can depend upon Zinsser’s Grade 1 to deliver, every time.
Fungal degradation, over time, can create odour problems, too, which can detract from the aesthetical beauty of the property when open to the public. These smells often stem from stains and discolouration of the surface coating – nicotine, soot, smoke damage, water-stains, graffiti, marker pens, etc. – and as a virtually odourless product, Zinsser Grade 1 can block these stains and smells, offering up to eight years’ performance, with minimal redecoration or maintenance downtime.
Quick drying and non-yellowing, Grade 1 is the must-have renovation project paint.

Assuming your question is in relation to the coating itself, it is a solvent-based breathable all in one primer, sealer and finish coat paint. This can be applied to many suitably prepared subtatrates including walls, ceilings, stucco, plaster, concrete and mortar, however it isn't recommended for use on a vinyl substrate. The problem area was treated, then covered in tanking slurry and then replastered. Can I use this product over the top of the new plaster? Is it non-vinyl? Many thanks for your help. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: This paint can be applied to clean, dry, sound bare plaster. The Grade 1 product is excellent for application to surfaces with PH ratings up to 12.5 such as lime plaster. | |

Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Zinsser AllCoat (Solvent-Based) and Zinsser Grade 1 will cope well with the distemper, however if you intend to over paint the Zinsser AllCoat (Solvent Based) would be the preferred choice instead of Grade 1 as this would be chosen if it was to be left as a finish and not overcoated. | |
