1001 Fire Retardant Treatment is a clear fire retardant treatment for internal & external timber and some timber derived substrates achieving Euro Class B & C (equivalent to UK Class 1 & 0)
1001 Fire Retardant Treatment is a colourless, water based ready to use solution that is absorbed into the surface of the substrate. 1001 Fire Retardant Treatment is specified and used extensively in the EU and UK and is designed to keep the natural beauty of the wood.
Features & Benefits
*please consult the Technical Department for advice on suitable finishes before commencing works.
Timber treated with 1001 Fire Retardant Treatment does not react with galvanised steel, gun nails or zinc coated screws. Critical engineering properties i.e. strength, durability, hygroscopicity and corrosivity are also not compromised. 1001 Fire Retardant Treatment is water based and easy to apply, possessing high diffusion properties it quickly penetrates the surface of the substrate.
It does not require a protective finishing coat and can be left natural or if specified over-coated. Left naturally, timber may darken slightly. Trials should be carried out on decorative timber species to check any shade changes prior to the full application of the 1001 Fire Retardant Treatment.
1001 Fire Retardant Treatment has non-flammable properties which restrict ignition and the spread of flame. It will not wash out once dry, it is not converted into smoke when exposed to high temperatures, and carbon char is restricted to the immediate area. Materials treated with 1001 Fire Retardant Treatment when exposed to temperatures of up to 1700°C are subject to charcoal forming, restricting the spread of flame.
1001 Fire Retardant Treatment can be used on cladding, staircases, trusses, joists, walls, log cabins, garages, pool enclosures, saunas and many other projects both inside and outside.
If the wood needs to be given 3 coats, does the coverage take this into account? Thanks
Becki from Nottingham (UK) - 27/10/16
The amount of 1001 Fire Retardant Treatment that is applied to each square metre of timber is what is important, the number of coats you do this in is not. To achieve protection, 1001 Fire Retardant Treatment needs to be applied at a rate of 270ml per m² of timber (360ml per m² on Cedar woods). If you can apply these consumption rates in one coat then that is fine, however if you can only get 90ml per m² on in one coat then you need to apply a further two coats to achieve the 270ml per m².
To simplify, 5 litres will protect a maximum area of 18.5m² (13.8m² for cedar) and 20 litres 74m² (55.5m² for cedar). So for example, if you have a timber clad wall that is 18m² you need to purchase 1 x 5lt and apply it evenly across the wall until you have none left. If this takes you 1 coat to do then great, if it takes you 3,4,5 etc. then this is also fine as long as the full 5lt is used.
Try to forget about the number of coats and just ensure you purchase and apply sufficient 1001 Fire Retardant Treatment to the area you have.
Tip: Manual low pressure garden sprayers or knapsack sprayers are ideal to achieve a 1 coat application.

Which data sheet refers to cedar timber for the use of 1001 clear fire retardant paint
Doug Veasey from Hitchin (UK) - 06/04/16
The '1001 FR Treatment TDS' is the data sheet you require. TDS stands for Technical Data Sheet, the MSDS also available is the Material Safety Data Sheet.
