- Other colours may be available to order specially - prices and lead times may be different. Contact our sales team for more information on 0113 2455450 or [email protected]
Spreading Rate
- Single coat: minimum of 1Kg/m2 / 1 litre/m2
- Built-up system (wet-on-wet): minimum of 1.5Kg/m2 / 1.5 litre/m2
Drying Time
- Up to 8 hours or overnight depending on temperature and conditions
- Full cure up to 7 days
Water Repellency
- Rainfall immediately after application has no adverse effect
Preparation and Application
Clear all areas of moss, lichen and debris by brushing or power washing and remove surface water and any contamination such as Oil or Grease and allow to dry. Apply Britannia Fungicidal Wash to prevent further fungal/algal growth.
- Stir well before use
- Do not thin
Most roofing substrates to be treated will not normally require priming.
To the dry and cleaned surface, apply a generous coat of Britannia Durashield Waterproof Roof Coating by brush or squeegee, at the minimum specified spreading rate as stated above under the relevant heading.
Application Temperature should be between 5°C-25°C.
Highly Porous/Friable Surfaces
Felted surfaces, fibrous cement corrugated cladding, sheeting and guttering should be primed with Britannia Durashield FD Primer.
Fibrous cement corrugated sheeting: two coats of Durashield FD Primer must always be applied to this substrate.
Porous Concrete and Masonry
Prime with Britannia Durashield FD Primer
Porous Weathered Asphalt and Bituminous Surfaces
Prime with Britannia Durashield FD Primer.
Note: discolouration can occur over Weathered Asphalt or Bituminous Surfaces. An extra coat may therefore be required for decorative purposes.
Do not use on new bituminous primers/coatings or surfaces.
OSB/Plywood and Wooden Substrates
OSB/Plywood, wooden substrates and insulation board must be treated with a 50mm wide strip of Britannia Tape (any other tape must be tested before use). A continuous surface should be created before commencing with the application of Britannia Durashield FD Primer and fully scrimmed with the built-up system (wet on wet).
Weathered Single-Ply Membranes*
PVC, hypalon and TPO roof membranes - see primer guide below (click to jump down)
Metal
All ferrous metals should be primed with Britannia Metal Primer - see the technical data sheet on the product page for details.
Lead
No primer required on old lead, sheet/valleys. - do not use on new lead.
Aluminium, Copper and Galvanised Steel
These should be primed with Britannia 1 Pack Etching Primer - see the technical data sheet on the product page for details.
*It is good practice to inspect and carry out adhesion tests on any existing porous coatings or substrate prior to application of the coating.
*Adhesion/pull off test required
Splits, cracks, joints and seals, crazed areas
Pay particular attention to clean out any splits/cracks/joints and seals by scraping or brushing off with a stiff bristle brush before applying the Britannia Durashield Primer.
Repair all faults in the surface by using a proprietary filler.
Surface faults
Repair all faults in the surface with either Britannia’s Reinforcing Scrim in the first of two coats or using a proprietary filler.
In areas where excessive movement may occur, additional reinforcement must be incorporated into the coating.
Scrim Recommendation
- Apply Reinforcing Scrim to all areas which can be ponded
- Reinforcing Scrim must be used on all upstands, curves, skylight bases and rainwater outlets
- Reinforcing Scrim to be used on all gutter expansion joints
- Reinforcing Scrim to be used on all repaired areas
Fibrous corrugated concrete sheeting and skylight surrounds
- Apply to both horizontal and vertical laps including around ALL fixings. Before starting, carefully tighten any fixings that may be loose
- When reinforcing the horizontal laps, ensure the reinforcement follows the profile of the sheet exactly, eliminating any possibility of air pockets being trapped under the reinforcement
- Any cracking within the sheets should also be reinforced
- Finish with an additional coat of Durashield over the scrimmed area
Application of Scrim
Reinforcing Scrim is embedded into the wet Durashield avoiding creasing. Adjacent lengths of the reinforcement must overlap by 75mm. Finish with one coat of Durashield.
Application of Coating
To the dry surface, apply a generous coat of Britannia Durashield by brush or roller at the specified spreading rate as stated under the heading.
The substrate and ambient temperature for the application of the system must be between 2°C and 35°C
DO NOT APPLY to frozen or damp surfaces.
DO NOT APPLY in hot direct sunlight or coating may skin. Work away from the area immediately being applied and toward a suitable escape access. Do not walk on newly coated surface whilst application is in progress.
Important
Air conditioning vents should be sealed for a minimum of 24 hours during and after the application.
- Refer to the product data sheet (available to download from the "attachments" tab above) for more precautions.
This coating is only valid for applications in the UK.
MINIMUM FINISHED FALL: when using this product it is important that a minimum finished fall of 1:80 is achieved, as stated in BS 6229:2018 (Code of Practice for the application of Liquid Applied Waterproofing Systems to flat roofs with continuously supported coverings).
Cleaning
For all cleaning use White Spirit.
