Product Description

Blackfriar Professional Solar Reflective Paint White is a specially formulated reflective acrylic coating for reducing solar heat gain on tiles, felt, asphalt, wood, masonry and concrete surfaces. Reflective, textured finish, waterproofs and protects, flexible, resists fungal growth, easy to apply, water based, brush or roller application, can be applied to previously painted surfaces.

Features & Benefits

  • Reflective, textured finish
  • Waterproofs and protects
  • Flexible - allows for contraction and expansion
  • Resists surface fungal growth
  • Easy to apply - water-based
  • Brush or roller application
  • Can be applied to previously painted surfaces

Preparation

All surfaces should be clean and free of loose material and contamination. Remove all moss, lichen, fungal growth and other contaminants. Scrape off any loose paint. Surfaces can be slightly damp but they should not be wet. Priming is not necessary.

  • Roofs - Asbestos/cement roofs can be successfully coated, but may require special preparation to comply with asbestos regulations. All surfaces must be clean and free from loose and dusty matter. Previous coatings should be sound and well bonded.
  • Brick and Cementitious Surfaces - Surfaces should be clean, dry and free of any loose material and contamination. Use a fungicide like Blackfriar Anti-Mould Solution or Concentrated Fungicidal Wash to remove any fungi, algae or moss, etc. Scrape off any loose paint. Existing hard smooth, glossy paint should be lightly sanded to provide a key. Wash with a detergent solution, rinse with water and allow to dry. Make good any minor defects with external grade filler. Damp down dry, absorbent surfaces with water to leave them slightly damp.
  • Wooden Surfaces - All bare wooden surfaces should be clean and dry. Not recommended for door or window frames. Do not apply to previously painted wood unless all traces of old paint have been removed.

Application

Stir thoroughly before use. Apply with a brush or roller working the paint in any surface imperfections. Two coats recommended. Blackfriar Professional White Solar Reflective Paint is tough and durable but is not suitable for persistent foot or mechanical traffic. It should be applied between 10°C and 30°C. Avoid applying to very hot substrates such as dark surfaces in direct sunlight. Do not apply if rainfall is imminent or if humidity is very high.

Coverage Rate

4-8m²/litre per coat. Two coats recommended.

Drying Time

  • 2-4hrs @20°C. Allow to dry for a minimum of 4hrs @20°C between coats.
  • Full cure is achieved in 5-7 days @20°C

Clean Up

Remove as much product from application equipment as possible before washing with water. Do not empty into drains or watercourses. Some local authorities have special facilities for the disposal of waste coatings.

Questions

questions C Boll on 27/07/2018
Question:

On a dark grey south west facing roof of heavy Marley tiles, at a slope of approx 45 degrees what percentage reduction in solar heat gain in hot weather could be expected?

Answer:

Blackfriar don’t have any figures for their Blackfriar Professional Solar Reflective Paint White in relation to this, it is a white paint that doesn’t absorb sunlight and therefore reduces the temperature of the substrate. They have never carried out specific tests to determine the reduction in surface temperature.

questions Lynn on 25/07/2018
Question:

Would this be suitable for roofing felt? Thanks

Answer:

Yes, two coats are recommended by brush or roller.

questions Wendy Campbell  on 05/06/2018
Question:

Can this be used inside for glas porch roof

Answer:

No, we would instead recommend something like Coo-Var White Glass Shading.

questions David Howie on 15/05/2018
Question:

Hi, can this paint be used on metal roofs? It's actually for shipping container roofs.

Answer:

No, for flat metal roofs that may be subject to ponding water we would instead recommend GacoPro Roof Coating which is available in Solar Reflective White or Light Grey.

questions Wayne Younger on 21/02/2017
Question: Can this white solar reflective paint be used on an old asphalt roof?
Answer:

Yes.

All surfaces should be clean and free of loose material and contamination. Remove all moss, lichen, fungal growth and other contaminants. Scrape off any loose paint. Surfaces can be slightly damp but they should not be wet. Priming is not necessary.

Apply with a brush or roller working the paint in any surface imperfections, two coats are recommended.

questions Jeni on 24/11/2016
Question: Can this paint be used to reflect light on a party wall. Or is there another product that would do this?
Answer:

Assuming you wish to reflect light off the wall into your property to brighten it up a little this should be fine. We would recommend using the Solar Reflective White, not the Aluminium. We also assume the party wall is a standard masonry surface, if so the paint will be fine to go onto this with no specialist primers.

questions David Botcherby on 11/06/2015
Question:

Is Blackfriar Professional Solar Reflective Paint suitable for a polycarbonate consevatory roof to reduce the heat inside. Should it be applied to the inside (preferably) or the outside? Would White or Aluminium be most effective?

Answer:

Blackfriar Professional Solar Reflective Paint isn't suitable for polycarbonate but Bedec Multi Surface Paint is suitable for the inside and Bedec Super-Flex is suitable for the outside. It's totally up to you which you prefer to use as both with be equally effective at reflecting the heat. Most commonly conservatories are done in white rather than aluminium as it will not darken the room as much.
