    Description

Blackfriar Professional Solar Reflective Paint White is a specially formulated reflective acrylic coating for reducing solar heat gain on tiles, felt, asphalt, wood, masonry and concrete surfaces. Reflective, textured finish, waterproofs and protects, flexible, resists fungal growth, easy to apply, water based, brush or roller application, can be applied to previously painted surfaces.

    Recommended Uses

    • Tiles
    • Felt
    • Asphalt
    • Wood

    Preparation

All surfaces should be clean and free of loose material and contamination. Remove all moss, lichen, fungal growth and other contaminants. Scrape off any loose paint. Surfaces can be slightly damp but they should not be wet. Priming is not necessary.

    • Roofs - Asbestos/cement roofs can be successfully coated, but may require special preparation to comply with asbestos regulations. All surfaces must be clean and free from loose and dusty matter. Previous coatings should be sound and well bonded.
    • Brick and Cementitious Surfaces - Surfaces should be clean, dry and free of any loose material and contamination. Use a fungicide like Blackfriar Anti-Mould Solution or Concentrated Fungicidal Wash to remove any fungi, algae or moss, etc. Scrape off any loose paint. Existing hard smooth, glossy paint should be lightly sanded to provide a key. Wash with a detergent solution, rinse with water and allow to dry. Make good any minor defects with external grade filler. Damp down dry, absorbent surfaces with water to leave them slightly damp.
    • Wooden Surfaces - All bare wooden surfaces should be clean and dry. Not recommended for door or window frames. Do not apply to previously painted wood unless all traces of old paint have been removed.

    Application

Stir thoroughly before use. Apply with a brush or roller working the paint in any surface imperfections. Two coats recommended. Blackfriar Professional White Solar Reflective Paint is tough and durable but is not suitable for persistent foot or mechanical traffic. It should be applied between 10°C and 30°C. Avoid applying to very hot substrates such as dark surfaces in direct sunlight. Do not apply if rainfall is imminent or if humidity is very high.

    Coverage Rate

4-8m²/litre per coat. Two coats recommended.

    Drying Time

    • 2-4hrs @20°C. Allow to dry for a minimum of 4hrs @20°C between coats.
    • Full cure is achieved in 5-7 days @20°C

    Clean Up

Remove as much product from application equipment as possible before washing with water. Do not empty into drains or watercourses. Some local authorities have special facilities for the disposal of waste coatings.

    Question:

Hello, Would this be suitable for painting existing grp flat roof to help reduce temperature in upstairs rooms? Thank you.

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

No this would not be suitable, you could consider Britannia Aquashield Eco.

This can be applied to clean, dry, sound and prepared grp.

This is available in black, grey or solar reflective white.

    questions Lauren on 2023-06-14 05:55:52
    Question:

I have been told this paint may not adhere to a green felt flat roof, is that correct?

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

The solar reflective paint may be applied to a stable felt roof.

questions Lisa Kingscott on 2023-05-11 14:03:10
    Question:

What is the solar reflectance according to ASTM C1549? What is the thermal emittance according to ASTM C1371?

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

The light reflectance value is 89.31% and the SRI (solar reflective index) is ˜112.9.

Unfortunately we do not have a thermal emittance measure, the Solar Reflective paint is not guaranteed to reduce heat, but heat is reflected.

    Question:

Our house gets too hot in summer; is this suitable for brick walls that take a lot of sun? Is it breathable? Thanks

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

This product can be applied to brick walls, but it is not a breathable paint.

    questions Ranu on 2023-03-16 18:34:19
    Question:

Does this paint contain barium sulphate which was used by engineers at Perdue University to produce ultra white paint?

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Barium sulphate is not listed in the Safety Data sheet.

You can find the Safety Data Sheet in the data sheets tab on the product page.

    Question:

Hi can Blackfriar Professional Solar Reflective Paint White be painted on the inside of a skylight? Thanks for your help

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Unfortunately no, this is not suitable for application to glass or polycarbonate.

Assuming the skylight is glass or polycarbonate, it is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we can recommend Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 followed by Zinsser Perma-White Interior.

This can be mixed to many RAL, NCS or BS colours in a matt or satin finish.

Please note that brush strokes will be visable from outside.

    questions Cathrn on 2022-11-06 15:13:22
    Question:

We would like to use this on the inside of our conservatory roof, which is quite large, so I'm hoping you will confirm that one coat of this paint is all that is necessary?

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Unfortunately no this would not be suitable.

Assuming the conservatory roof is polycarbonate, you are painting the internal sides of the roof, it is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we can recommend Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 followed by Zinsser Perma-White Interior.

Please note brush marks would be visible from the outside.

    Question:

Could you please let me know the amount of light "solar reflective paint" reflects in percentage?

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

The light reflecting value of the Solar Reflective Paint is 89.31%.

    Question:

questions james k on 31/10/2019 Question: I would like to use this over some MDF, would i require a sealer before hand? Im not bothered about a smooth finish to the surface. Answer: Yes, the data sheet states; 'Wooden Surfaces - All bare wooden surfaces should be clean and dry. Not recommended for door or window frames. Do not apply to previously painted wood unless all traces of old paint have been removed.' Is that yes it needs to be sealed, or yes i can put it straight onto MDF? Also is spraying out of the question with a HVLP gun if watered down a little, it is water based after all?

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

It will go straight onto MDF but a sealer coat of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 would be a good idea. If the MDF is for exterior use these paints will not prevent the MDF from swelling over time due to moisture absorption. The product can be sprayed but some HVLP sprayers may not be suitable. The paint is quite thick, we do not advise thinning more than 10% maximum with water.

    questions Elena on 2019-11-24 15:45:07
    Question:

Can this paint be used on an asphalt balcony? I spilled some acetone by accident while using PU foam, and it removed a bit of previously applied solar reflective paint (white, do not know the brand). Can this paint be also used on the cured PU foam? Thank you!

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

This should be OK, however the product is water based and can’t be used at lower temperatures, i.e below 10°C. The product should take to the cured PU foam as well but couldn't guarantee this.

    Question:

i have spilt a who tin of your solar reflective paint on my patio - yes i know you could not dream it up - whats best method of remoavla if possible

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

If the paint is still wet, scoop up as much paint as you can using a dust pan or similar. Mop up using sand/ sawdust/ rags, avoid spreading the paint further. There will still be some paint impregnated into the surface, at this stage washing with warm water and a scrubbing brush will take it up. Don’t flood the area with water as you will just spread the paint further.

If the paint is dry a paint stripper will be required such as Blackfriar Professional Paint & Varnish Remover.

    Question:

We’re interested in you Solar Reflective Paint and would like to know if this can be painted on top of a EPDM roof without damage to the EPDM rubber?

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Blackfriar Professional Solar Reflective Paint White is not recommended for EPDM, however GacoPro Roof Coating is available in Solar Reflective White and is suitable for application to EPDM.

    Question:

On a dark grey south west facing roof of heavy Marley tiles, at a slope of approx 45 degrees what percentage reduction in solar heat gain in hot weather could be expected?

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Blackfriar don’t have any figures for their Blackfriar Professional Solar Reflective Paint White in relation to this, it is a white paint that doesn’t absorb sunlight and therefore reduces the temperature of the substrate. They have never carried out specific tests to determine the reduction in surface temperature.

    Question:

Hi, can this paint be used on metal roofs? It's actually for shipping container roofs.

    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

No, for flat metal roofs that may be subject to ponding water we would instead recommend GacoPro Roof Coating which is available in Solar Reflective White or Light Grey.

Question: Can this white solar reflective paint be used on an old asphalt roof?
    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

    Yes.

All surfaces should be clean and free of loose material and contamination. Remove all moss, lichen, fungal growth and other contaminants. Scrape off any loose paint. Surfaces can be slightly damp but they should not be wet. Priming is not necessary.

Apply with a brush or roller working the paint in any surface imperfections, two coats are recommended.

Question: Can this paint be used to reflect light on a party wall. Or is there another product that would do this?
    Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:

Assuming you wish to reflect light off the wall into your property to brighten it up a little this should be fine. We would recommend using the Solar Reflective White, not the Aluminium. We also assume the party wall is a standard masonry surface, if so the paint will be fine to go onto this with no specialist primers.
