Surface preparation
The substrate must be clean, sound and dry: For the best possible edge coverage, sand down sharp edges. Vacuum and dip treated wood, as well as industrially applied substrates (containing wax or other water repellent additives) should be degreased with methylated spirit. Previously treated wood should be cleaned using a suitable cleaning agent. Sand glossy and hard surfaces or use a suitable cleaning agent. Remove loose paint/stain and wood fibres by wire brush or scraping.

Pretreatment
Apply a suitable anti fungal treatment in accordance with the user instructions. Bare iron and nail heads to be primed with a suitable primer.

Primer

  • Bare softwood should be primed with Jotun Visir Clear Primer
  • Bare hardwood should be primed with a diluted coat (up to 20% with water) of Jotun Demidekk Ultimate Windows and Doors.

Questions

questions Ian  on 06/05/2018
Question:

We need to paint over Jotun Butinox2 with a new paint system Can we apply Demidekk ultimate without any preparation as the original surface is gloss oil based paint and the new paint is water based how does it adhere to the old surface.

Answer:

The substrate must be clean, sound and dry. Previously treated wood should be cleaned using a suitable cleaning agent. Remove loose paint/stain and wood fibres by wire brush or scraping. Sand glossy and hard surfaces then apply 2-3 coats of Jotun Demidekk Ultimate as required.

questions Rory on 19/03/2018
Question:

The technical data sheet for Demidekk Ultimate Windows & Doors says "Please be aware of linseed oil problems". So how is it used with fresh putty?

Answer:

Jotun are more concerned about wood treatments containing linseed oil being repainted with the Demidekk product, not being in contact with putty. If its new timber then the wood stain should be applied first before fixing with putty. If colouring new putty its problematic because the linseed oil in the putty will repel water, including a water based woodstain. However if the putty is allowed to dry out and weather then there are no problems.
