Architectural™ (solvent based) is a decorative microporous, flexible coating which allows all kinds of timber to breathe. The low sheen opaque finish provides excellent water shedding properties. Architectural™ resists mould growth and protects timber from UV light. The wood stain penetrates the surface of the timber giving perfect adhesion, so no separate primer is required and the surface will not flake or crack.

![]() | Question:
Can Solignum architectural solvent based be applied over external joinery previously painted with the Solignum water based product |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
You can overpaint the water based with the solvent when it has weathered but it may be just as easy in this instance to re-apply the water based version if this is what was used before.
![]() | Question:
If cost is not the primary consideration what is better, in terms of protection and durability, for external windows and doors in an exposed position, Solignum architectural water based or spirit based? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
There is not much difference in performance between the 2 products. You can expect a redecoration interval of 5 years plus for both.
![]() | Question:
Can solignum architectural opaque woodsstain be used on previously treated surfaces or does the surface have to betaken back to original wood surface |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
The data sheet states 'Wood should be unweathered, bare, dry, free of mould, dirt, bark, paint, varnish or polish.' If your timber is previously coated with something, you may be better looking at the Zinsser AllCoat Exterior range.
![]() | Question: How many coats would we need for a new pretreated five bar gate It has to be white as that is the name of our house ! |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: 2-3 coats by brush should be applied directly to the prepared timber. You can find full application instructions in the Technical Data Sheet available for download form the 'DATASHEETS' tab just above the main description on the product page.
![]() | Question: How far does a 5 ltrs go??? Thanks john. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team: Sawn Timber: 20-40m² per 5L / per coat
