Blackfriar Polyurethane Floor Varnish provides the perfect finish for most wooden floors. Provides an attractive, durable and protective finish which is easy to clean and seals the surface against dirt.
- Interior use.
- For all types of wood.
- Tough and durable.
- Resistant to hot water splashes, dilute acids/alkalis and some household stains.
Blackfriar Polyurethane Floor Varnish provides your floors with a finish that is attractive, durable, and easy-to-clean by sealing the surface against dirt. Blackfriar Polyurethane Floor Varnish can be used on most floor surfaces, including chipboard, plywood, hardboard, parquet and cement.
Ensure surface to be varnished is clean, dry, sound and free from wax, oil or any other contamination. If wax has been used clean the surface thoroughly with white spirit prior to sanding. Bare wood should be sanded to a smooth surface, always working with the grain. Sound, previously varnished surfaces should be lightly sanded to provide a key. Existing varnished surfaces which are unsound or in poor condition can be stripped back to bare timber with Blackfriar Professional Paint and Varnish Remover.
Stir thoroughly with a broad stirrer prior to use. The product may be applied by brush or roller. If applying by brush, apply evenly using light strokes following the grain of the wood. If rollering, use a short nap mohair roller. For best results 3 coats are recommended on new wood and 2 coats on previously varnished surfaces. Prior to application of the final coat or if the overcoating time is exceeded lightly abrade with fine glass paper working with the grain and remove dust.
Not suitable for use on plastic type materials, eg. imitation wood. Before applying varnish we recommend a trial application on an inconspicuous area of the floor. Once dried check adhesion with sticky tape. This is essential particularly when applying to cork tiles, prefinished tiles or laminate flooring.
Touch dry in 4 - 6 hours. Recoat after 16 hours and within 3 days. Drying times are based on an ambient temperature of 20°C and 50% relative humidity. Lower temperatures or higher humidity will prolong the drying and overcoating times.
Remove as much product as possible from application equipment before washing with white spirit. Do not empty into drains or water courses. Some local authorities have special facilities for the disposal of waste coatings.
Store in a dry, safe place. Do not store in environments where extreme temperatures may occur. Keep within 5-30°C. Do not store in direct sunlight.

I have a solid wood worktop finished in a water based polyurethane however water droplets soak in! Can I use your varnish to create a solid film to protect from this. Dave
Unfortunately we do not have a product to recommend for this application to a wooden worktop.

After floor application how many days do you recommend we wait before public usage. (ref VOCs) thank you
Assuming good drying conditions and ventilation (20°C and 50% relative humidity), after the final coat has been applied, the floor should be suitable to traffic after 3 days. Lower temperatures or higher humidity will prolong drying times.

Can this varnish be used on pebble steps outside to enhance colours or would this become slippery when wet ?
It would almost certainly become slippery, we would instead suggest trying something like Smartkote Safekote which is also available in clear but has an anti-slip element within the product.

Can I use this varnish over Bourne Seal varnish (solvent based) without completely re-sanding the whole floor back to bare wood, i.e. with only light sanding and cleaning?
Yes, ensure the substrate to be varnished is sound and free from any surface contaminant likely to give adhesion problems (e.g. wax, grease, polish etc). As you have correctly suggested you should ensure the existing varnish is clean and abraded to provide a suitable key for the new varnish to stick to. If preparing a previously wax polished floor always degrease prior to sanding. If any areas go back to bare wood, thin the first coat with up to 10% white spirit as a sealer coat.
