Preparation
Ensure surface to be varnished is clean, dry, sound and free from wax, oil or any other contamination. If wax has been used clean the surface thoroughly with white spirit prior to sanding. Bare wood should be sanded to a smooth surfaces, always working with the grain.
Sound previously varnished surfaces should be lightly sanded to provide a key. Remove dust. Existing varnished surfaces which are unsound or in poor condition can be stripped back to bare timber with Blackfriar Professional Paint and Varnish Remover.
Application
Stir thoroughly prior to use. The product may be applied by brush, roller or spray.
If applying by brush, apply evenly using light strokes following the grain of the wood.
If rollering use a short nap mohair roller.
For best results 3-4 coats are recommended on new wood and 2-3 coats on previously varnished surfaces.
Prior to application of the final coat or if the overcoating time is exceeded lightly abrade with fine glass paper working with the grain and remove dust. The varnish will appear cloudy when wet but will quickly dry to a clear or translucent finish.
Thinning
When applying to new or bare wood, thin the first coat with up to 10% water.
Limitations
- Not suitable for use on plastic type materials, eg. imitation wood
- The clear matt finish is not suitable for use on floors
- Do not use over French polish
- The final shade of the varnish depends upon the orginal colour and absorbency of the wood
- We recommend to test for shade on an off-cut or inconspicuous area
- If using more than one tin we recommend mixing them to ensure an even shade is obtained
- Do not use under cold (less than 10°C), damp or humid conditions
