Mineral Paint
Mineral paints – such as those from Graphenstone and Keim – offer a natural alternative to conventional coatings: highly breathable, durable, and designed for use on lime render, concrete, brick, and masonry. These advanced coatings are non-toxic, contain little or no VOCs, and form a chemical bond with mineral substrates, allowing moisture to pass through without trapping damp. Commonly used as wall paint for interior lime plaster and as masonry paint for exterior façades, they’re trusted on heritage buildings, eco homes, and public spaces. The combination of traditional ingredients and modern innovation results in finishes that resist peeling, flaking, and fading – even under harsh weather or strong UV exposure.

Mineral Paints for Breathable Walls
Mineral paints deliver proven longevity in challenging conditions. By bonding directly with mineral substrates, these paints become part of the surface itself, resisting UV breakdown, water damage, and fungal growth. Whether used as exterior paint on exposed façades or in coastal environments, they outperform conventional coatings where durability is critical. Mineral paints don’t trap moisture, helping to prevent blistering, flaking, and efflorescence over time. They are also fire-resistant and well suited for domestic and commercial interiors where environmental standards must be met.
Graphenstone’s lime and graphene formulations support carbon-neutral builds and meet LEED/BREEAM criteria, while Keim’s silicate-based systems are trusted on national trust properties and listed buildings. These alkaline paints are naturally mould-resistant, carry Cradle to Cradle certifications, and produce minimal odour during application – ideal for spaces in regular use. As a durable interior paint or a long-lasting façade finish, mineral paints deliver breathability, strength, and colour stability across more than 5,000 available shades.
Mineral Paint FAQs
Can I apply mineral paint over emulsion or acrylic surfaces?
Mineral paints are not compatible with modern synthetic coatings such as vinyl, acrylic, or emulsion paints without preparation. These paints rely on a chemical bond with the surface, which can only occur with absorbent, mineral-rich substrates like lime render, stone, or bare brick. To apply mineral paint over non-mineral surfaces, a specialist primer or bonding bridge must be used to create a suitable base. Without it, the paint may not adhere properly and will likely fail prematurely. Always check product datasheets for substrate compatibility and preparation requirements.
Can I apply mineral paint to plasterboard, gypsum, or modern drywall?
Not directly. Plasterboard and gypsum are highly absorbent but lack the chemical structure needed for mineral paints to bond properly. A stabilising primer - often called a fixative or bonding primer - is required to seal the surface and prepare it for coating. Without this, the paint may absorb too quickly and become powdery or uneven. Some mineral paint systems offer full compatibility when the correct undercoat is used, so refer to the manufacturer's guidance for the system build-up.
Are mineral paints wipeable or easy to clean once applied?
Mineral paints are not designed for scrubbing or harsh cleaning, especially in their more traditional matte finishes. That said, some products offer higher surface hardness or water resistance for low-traffic areas that may require occasional wiping. Always use a soft, damp cloth - abrasive sponges or cleaners will damage the finish. For areas that need regular cleaning, consider specifying a silicate-based paint with a more durable finish, or use a compatible mineral-based protective glaze.
Do mineral paints need a separate sealer or protective coating?
Usually not. One of the key benefits of mineral paint is its open structure, which allows moisture to escape while resisting weather and dirt. Sealing this surface can compromise breathability and trap moisture behind the coating. However, in some systems - especially for commercial or high-impact areas - a breathable, mineral-compatible topcoat or hydrophobic finish may be recommended. Always follow the paint system guidelines rather than introducing incompatible coatings.
Can mineral paint be applied by spray, or is it brush-only?
Mineral paints can be applied by brush, roller, or spray. Spraying offers speed and a more even finish, especially on large façades or textured surfaces. However, mineral paints are water-based and often require dilution for spraying, so it’s important to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for pressure, tip size, and thinning ratios. Airless spray systems are commonly used, and extra care must be taken to protect surrounding surfaces due to fine misting.
Are mineral paints safe for allergy sufferers or chemically sensitive users?
Yes. Mineral paints are made using natural ingredients, with no synthetic resins, plasticisers, or harmful solvents. Many products carry certification for indoor air quality, with extremely low VOC emissions both during and after application. They are odourless once dry and free from the petrochemical compounds that often trigger sensitivities. This makes them ideal for schools, hospitals, nurseries, and homes where chemical exposure needs to be limited.
Are these paints environmentally certified or suitable for sustainable building schemes?
Yes. Graphenstone and Keim both offer products with high-level environmental credentials. Many are Cradle to Cradle Certified™, meaning they meet strict standards for material health, reuse, and responsible manufacturing. Additionally, they contribute points to LEED, BREEAM, and other sustainability frameworks. Graphenstone paints can even absorb CO₂ during curing, supporting carbon reduction goals. These features make mineral paints highly attractive for eco builds and low-impact construction projects.
