Jotun Hardtop XP is one of the most popular polyurethane topcoats – protecting millions of square metres every year. It is available worldwide and is a favourite topcoat among painters. Jotun Hardtop XP is extremely versatile and can be applied by airless spray, brush or roller on a wide range of primers. Roller application properties are excellent with good flow and finish.
Low dry spray makes the gloss level predictable and on-site friendly. Jotun Hardtop XP has great gloss and colour retention, and gives a better finish, less spills and lower paint consumption. Jotun Hardtop XP is recommended as a glossy topcoat over most epoxy systems where a durable, weather-resistant finish is required in a wide range of aggressive atmospheres.

Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, this product isn't available in BS 00 E 55 White, however we do have many other White finishes available including Ready Mixed White and Jotun Standard 0001 White shades as alternatives.

Luke on 2022-09-09 13:46:12 | Question:
I have a fibreglass boat with tired gelcoat; spider cracks from dings, chips. Generally needs doing up. I am considering getting the surface prepared using 120 grit paper, wash down with std thinners and then applying Jotun Hardtop XP. It is an off white hull and I want to use a dark red. Apart form maybe needing a few coats, is there any reason why that surface preparation should not be a good substrate for this 2 pack paint ? Also, despite my best efforts, I am expecting brush marks; can this be sanded and polished to get super finishes ? Thanks in advance. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
We would advise any issues with the fibre glass such as cracks and chips should be repaired prior to application. Instead of washing down with solvents it is preferable to wash with a detergent (Fairy liquid solution) and fresh water wash. Assuming the fibreglass hull is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet we would normally recommend to prime first with Jotun Penguard HB followed by Jotun Hardtop XP. But if the surface has a light scratch pattern and is very clean, then yes you can apply the Jotun Hardtop XP direct. We would recommend a minimum of 2 brush or roller applied coats. Once the paint is hard dry it can be buffed up between coats, but avoid using polishing compounds.
Stefano on 2022-08-02 03:59:16 | Question:
I'm in the process of spray painting my boat. I've been recommended to use 30% thinner N.10 but I've noticed the paint stays a little "gummy" even after days. Is that normal? Thanks |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Thank you for the enquiry, we have contacted you directly for more information.
Magnus AHlberg on 2022-06-25 19:16:40 | Question:
Hi, I am using the Hardtop Xp as topcoat on my narrowboat (on top of Jotamastic 90) but it dries to fast, which makes really difficult to get an even finish. It is recommended 1:10 on the hardener - should I reduce it? If not, how much thinner can I use (rough %)? I have Jotun Thinner No. 10 available as a thinner. Appreciate advise on this. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
It is not recommend to alter the mixing ratio of Part A to Part B. The recommended maximum percentage of thinner for Jotun Hardtop XP is 5%, Jotun Thinner No. 10 should be used.
Andrew Docherty on 2020-11-30 10:22:55 | Question:
Can Jotun XP be used on Marina "D" fenders to cover small damage and abrasions marks? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Thank you for the enquiry, we have contacted you by email for more information.
Mike simcox on 2018-04-30 16:28:35 | Question:
Hi It says airless spray on hardtop xp? Can it not be sprayed using a normal air compressor ? Along with jotamastic 90 as a primer? Cheers |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Airless spray is preferred for Jotun Hardtop XP but air spray equipment can be used (see Application Guide for details - this can be downloaded from the 'Download' section on the product page). Jotun Jotamastic 90 can only be applied by airless spray.
Paul Rafferty on 2016-09-08 15:49:03 | Question:
Can you please provide a recommended maintenance cycle for the Hardtop XP two pac topcoat applied to Jotun Intumescent paint system in an external environment ?
Thanks | |||||||||||||||||||||
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
There are several corrosive categories (ISO 12944-5, see table below) we have to consider when offering such advice. In different environments the coatings will have different durability. Applying two coats of Jotun Hardtop XP instead of one would also increase the life expectancy. We normally suggest that the coating system should be inspected after 5 years and any remedial damage repaired. Equally if damaged in service we would strongly recommend urgent repairs. An undamaged coating system can last for up to 15 years assuming regular maintenance.
