Reliable Anti-Corrosive Protection
Metalex Zinc Phosphate Primer is a professional-grade synthetic adhesion primer designed for maximum corrosion protection on iron and steel. Based on alkyd resins and zinc phosphate, it penetrates surfaces effectively and forms a strong foundation layer. It performs exceptionally on rust-free and prepared ferrous substrates, providing a matt white finish ready for overcoating with alkyd-based systems.
Versatile Use Across Metal Surfaces
Suitable for both interior and exterior use, this primer can be applied directly to clean, untreated iron or steel surfaces. It is also effective on pre-treated metal, provided all contaminants, rust, grease, and old paint are fully removed. This product should not be used on aluminium or galvanised steel.
Surface Preparation Guidelines
For optimum performance, metal surfaces should be blast cleaned to SA 2½ grade. Where blasting is not possible, manual or mechanical cleaning using wire brushes, sanding tools, or rotary grinders is essential. Always remove loose material, oxidation, mill scale and previous coatings that may hinder direct contact with the primer. Two full coats of Metalex should be applied for best results, followed by a compatible topcoat - do not leave the primer exposed without finishing.
Application Method and Conditions
- Mix thoroughly before use to ensure consistency
- Apply by brush (up to 5% D-16 thinner) or spray (10–15% D-17 thinner)
- Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and free from salt, mould, or dust
- Only apply above 5°C - avoid excessive heat or direct sun
- Touch dry in 1 hour; allow 24 hours minimum before recoating
Performance and Compatibility
This primer boasts 49% ±2 solids by volume and covers approximately 9m² per litre at 50 microns dry film thickness. It bonds exceptionally well to properly prepared steel, making it ideal as a base layer before alkyd enamel topcoats. It enhances durability and resistance to mechanical damage.
Limitations and Safety Considerations
Do not apply to non-ferrous metals such as aluminium or galvanised steel. Always ensure the primer is not left without a suitable topcoat. Avoid use in confined spaces without ventilation. Handle using proper PPE and follow solvent safety protocols. This product is flammable (flash point 36°C) and contains VOCs (max. 400g/L), so must be used with care around ignition sources.
Clean tools and spills with D-16 or D-17 thinner. Dispose of waste responsibly. Do not discharge into drains or the environment. Always store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from frost and heat.
Important Usage Notes
Metalex Zinc Phosphate Primer is not intended for use on damp or contaminated substrates. Over-application, poor ventilation, or incorrect thinning may affect performance. Ensure strict adherence to preparation and recoat guidelines. For all technical guidance, limitations, and compatibility advice, please refer to the downloadable Technical Data Sheet.
