Spreading Rate
These will vary depending on substrate, the site conditions and longevity required.
Typically spreading rates will vary depending on the end use.
- As a guide, 1-2 kg/m2 (equivalent to 0.5-1m2)
- Coverage will depend on the type and profile of the surface
Drying Times
- Dry in 3 hours at 10°C (BS EN ISO 1517 dry surfaces)
- Apply in dry conditions at >10°C
- Do not apply below 10°C in wet or frosty conditions
- Resistant to light showers after 40 mins (on dry surfaces)
- Should not be completed in poor drying conditions or when rain is imminent
Preparation
Clear all areas of moss, lichen and debris by brushing or power washing and remove surface water and any contamination such as Oil or Grease and allow to dry. Apply Britannia Fungicidal Wash to prevent further fungal/algal growth.
Most roofing substrates to be treated will not normally require priming.
Highly Porous/Friable Surfaces:
- Concrete and Asbestos Cladding, Sheeting and Guttering should be primed with Britannia Aquashield Eco Waterproof Roof Coating thinned 10% with water prior to overcoating with a second coat of Britannia Aquashield Eco Waterproof Roof Coating
- These surfaces must be jet washed prior to applying the Britannia Aquashield Primer
- These Surfaces - Must be jet washed prior to priming
- Fibrous cement corrugated sheeting: two coats of Aquashield Primer must always be applied to this substrate
Metal Surfaces:
- Ferrous-New, Weathered and previously painted galvanised iron and steel
- Non-Ferrous Metals - Aluminium sheeting & Aluminium Alloy Box gutters and previously painted non-Ferrous Metals
- All these areas should be suitably prepared and primed as appropriate (see separate technical sheet) before application of Britannia Aquashield Eco Waterproof Roof Coating
Non-Porous Substrates:
- Slate, Polished bricks should be power washed abraded and completely dry, free from any contamination to achieve adhesion of the Britannia Aquashield Eco Waterproof Roof Coating
Bitumen and Asphalt Surfaces:
- Can be used as an isolator over new asphalt, tar, or bitumen surfaces
- Aged bitumen can be liable to crack and therefore further advice must be taken
Previously Painted or Coated Substrates:
- It is good practice to inspect and carry out adhesion tests on any existing coating or substrate prior to application of the coating
Splits, Cracks, Joints and Seals, Crazed Areas:
- These should be cleaned out with either a scraper or a stiff bristle brush and primed before applying Aquashield Eco thinned down 10% with water. A topcoat of Aquashield Eco should then be applied
- Repair all faults in the surface by either Britannia’s Reinforcing Scrim in the first of two coats or using a proprietary sealer
Surface Faults:
- Repair all faults in the surface with either Britannia’s Reinforcing Scrim in the first of two coats or using a proprietary filler
In areas where excessive movement may occur, additional reinforcement must be incorporated into the coating.
Application
- To the dry and cleaned surface, apply a generous coat of Britannia Aquashield Eco Waterproof Roof Coating by brush or squeegee, at the minimum specified spreading rate as stated above under the heading
- Please follow the coverage rates shown in Spreading Rate Section
- Application Temperature should be between 5°C-25°C
Cleaning
- Clean all equipment with water immediately after use and cured coating with white spirit
Shelf Life & Storage
- Up to 12 months if stored correctly in an unopened container
- Store within the temperature range 5°C-25°C
Precautions
- Keep out of reach of children
- In case of contact with eyes wash immediately with plenty of water
- Remove splashes from skin with soap and water or a recognised hand cleaner
- Protect from freezing
- Do not apply paint if there is a risk of heavy rain or frost
- Do not use near fishponds

John on 2024-10-09 11:59:11 | Question:
Good morning, Can this be used over a rubberized surface - ie Isoflex liquid rubber? Thank you |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the substrate is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the techncial datasheet, you could consider this product over an existing rubber surface. We'd recommend to trial to a small test area, checking for compatibility and adhesion, prior to full application.
Ian on 2023-10-10 23:57:54 | Question:
Good evening, I want to repaint my small fiberglass roof which has the colour faded in places, there is no damage, cracks or holes. I was reading your site questions and found Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 as a primer and then Aquashield Eco as the top coat. Is this correct as it's really just a cosmetic finish I require? Any advice gratefully received! |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming application is for aesthetics purposes, you have a clean, dry, sound fibreglass roof, free from any surface contaminations, any areas of flaking/peeling are treated in accordance with the technical datasheet, Britannia Aquashield Eco will be suitable for this application. We'd recommend a test area be carried out firstly for compatibility. Most roofing substrates to be treated don't normally require priming firstly unless highly porous or friable. In this event the first coat should be thinned to a maximum of 10% with clean water, followed by an unthinned second coat.
Debbie Carvalho on 2022-03-20 07:26:59 | Question:
Hello. I would like to use Britannia Aquashield Eco to paint a small area of GRP on my boat (above waterline and not walked on/heavily used - purely decorative). What preparation is required, please? Planning to sand GRP, apply a water-based primer (Zinsser Bulls Eye 123 - all products must be water-based) and then paint with Britannia Aquashield Eco. Is primer necessary? Do I even need to sand the surface? What do you advise, please? Thank you. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
While Britannia Aquashield Eco can be applied to GRP assuming it is clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the technical data sheet, we would not recommend it for any area subject to foot traffic. The GRP should be sanded prior to application.
Leeona Hawkins on 2021-03-25 11:47:01 | Question:
Can this product be used on concrete corrugated flat roof |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the concrete corrugated roof is bare, clean, dry, sound and prepared as detailed in the Technical Data sheet this product can be used. The first coat should be thinned 10% with clean water, then a second coat applied.
Raymond Hayes on 2020-07-20 16:55:46 | Question:
Can you please supply me with a cosh report for the Aquashield eco reinforced coating Liquid |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
This information is in the Safety Data Sheet, this can be found in the Data Sheets tab on the product page.
Matt Campbell on 2020-05-15 11:11:56 | Question:
Hi, is this product suitable for a GRP balcony with light foot traffic? Old fibreglass is in ok condition, no leaks. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
No, for this application we can recommend Bullet Roof Quick Prime, Bullet Roof Mono followed by Bullet Roof Mono Top. This is also available with anti slip options and added reinforcement if required. Please call our Technical team on 0113 2455450 option 2 and we can assist you with a specification.
Pete on 2020-05-12 12:52:40 | Question:
Is Aquashield suitable for use on a Polycarbonate roof? |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Assuming the polycarbonate roof is clean, dry, abraded and free from anything that can effect adhesion, it can be used subject to being tested for adhesion on a small area prior to full application.
Rhea on 2020-04-30 21:04:39 | Question:
Is Aquashield suitable as evironmentally, wildlife friendly coating for the wood frame form my raised beds. I am using old wooden wardrobes an they have a varnish on them. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
This product is designed for application to roof and not timber surfaces, so will not be suitable for this application. Assuming the wooden surface is clean, dry and abraded prior to application you can consider Wethertex OT25 Wood-Flex Satin Opaque Timber Paint. The lifespan of the timber and paint in this application is difficult to predict as ideally you would use treated timber for raised beds.
Thomas Forward on 2019-08-16 20:18:56 | Question:
What area in square mtrs does a 1kg tin of Aqua shield eco cover pls . And I assume it will take over a fibreglass flat roof. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Coverage is 0.5-1m² per kg and it is suitable for application to GRP/Fibreglass surfaces.
P Moseley on 2019-06-25 14:36:26 | Question:
Is Aquashield Eco for professional use only - (though, since I built the garage I intend to use it on, would I be classed as Professional, anyway?) Can this product be used to coat the existing torched-on felt flat roofing? Is the adhesion to cleaned roofing felt good without the use of any primer? Many thanks. |
Answer from Rawlins’ Technical Team:
Britannia Aquashield Eco is a water based product suitable for all types of compenent applicators and is not restricted to professional use only. A seperate primer is not required for application to felt and after cleaning the product can be applied directly.
