There is some flaking rust in the engine well/bilge of my narrowboat. Would this be suitable for use there?

Yes this product can be used on the bare steel of a narrow boat to treat pitted areas once the rusty steel is prepared by wire brushing, or ideally mechanical preparation, to remove as much of the rust as possible. Once this is done you could consider over-coating with Flag Bilge Paint .

This product has a coverage rating of 8-12m2 per litre, per coat. It is also water resistant, and heat resistant up to 120C.

Assuming you have suitably prepared the areas to be treated in accordance with the techncial datasheet, wire brushing any areas of rust that are flaking/peeling to a minimum st2 standard and wiping the surface down with a damp cloth, this product will be fine for applciation. We wouldn't recommend applying Rust-Oleum Pre-Paint Cleaner as this may be uncompatible with Flag Rust Convertor due to lack of testing.

No, Rust Converter is not a suitable product to treat the inside of a diesel tank.

Does the rust converter have shelf life, use by period, once can is opened?

This product doesn't have a confirmed shelf-life. Once opened, if stored in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and can still be stirred it is fine to use.

Will your rust converter stick to sound painted surfaces adjacent to the rusted area?

No, this is a treatment for application to bare rusted metals, it should not be applied to areas of paint.

Is this product suitable for use on underwater areas of a narrowboat prior to overcoating with a bitumen based product.

The Flag Rust Converter will be fine to use on a substrate that will be eventually underwater, but the manufacturer have not tested it with a bitumen based product over the top. We would recommend testing for compatibility and adhesion prior to full application.

Would this rust converter be suitable for treating an internal steel narrowboat drinking water tank?

No, this can be used to convert rust, but as this is a drinking water tank any suitable paint system we stock for this application would require the tank to be blasted prior to application which would make this process redundant.
