Intumescent paints and coatings are available for both internal and external application on steel and structural steel, although some are designed and tested specifically for external use only. These exterior steel intumescent coatings usually offer greater scope for application in adverse conditions such as in shop or on site where the steel may be exposed for a period of time during construction. Designed with improved weatherproof and in some instances corrosion protection qualities, external use intumescent paint is vital for builds where application and service of the substrate cannot be guaranteed in dry, internal environments.
External use steel and cast iron intumescent paints and coatings may require compatible primers or additional topcoats to achieve full fire-resistant protection to substrates. Please contact Rawlins Paints’ Technical Support Team for approved product combination systems.
Intumescent Paint for Steel disclaimer: Always ensure the product you are purchasing is suitable for the intended use/project. This will include but is not limited to gaining clarification that the product in question can achieve the required fire protection for the steel sections and environment you have. The sub-categories within the Intumescent Paints for Steel section allow users to filter by internal or external use, on-site or off-site application, and product type – water-based, solvent-based, epoxy-based and MMA-based. These are to be used as a guide only as there will be instances where a product will be able to achieve 90min protection on certain steel section sizes but not others, or where it is suitable for external use in environments up to C4 but not C5-M for example. For further product, project and pricing support, we ALWAYS recommend you contact our Technical Department before purchase and use.

All of the intumescent paints we offer have been tested to varying British/European standards by recognised independent third parties depending on their required use and performance. In addition to these industry standard tests, some products also offer additional paperwork after use by way of a ‘certificate’ that can be obtained in different ways - manufacturer dependent. Some require a form to be completed and returned by email, others have online application forms, others can be simply called to provide project details verbally. Not ALL products offer this additional supplement and if this type of certificate is important to your project you should contact our Technical Team on 0113 2455450 (option 2) or [email protected] to advise them of this so they can ensure they recommend a suitable product accordingly. Certain larger projects may also require the involvement of an independent inspector, again you should contact our Technical Department to discuss this if required.
