Textured Paint

Textured paints offer a practical way to refresh tired, uneven, or damaged walls. They help disguise surface flaws, fill small cracks, and add depth where needed. Ideal for feature walls, ceilings, and larger areas; for outdoor projects, look for exterior paint that combines tough weather resistance with high coverage. These coatings are built to stand up to rain, sunlight, and temperature changes, making them ideal for exterior walls and architectural features. Where brick, concrete, or render is involved, specialist masonry paints offer the durability and breathability needed to keep surfaces protected for years.

Textured Paint – Durable Coatings for Walls, Ceilings & High-Traffic Surfaces

Textured paints offer a practical solution for hiding cracks, uneven surfaces, and old plasterwork. These coatings are used across homes, commercial properties, and public buildings to improve appearance and durability without extensive surface repairs. Designed for ease of use, they’re suitable for both interior paint and exterior paint applications, with options tailored to different substrates and exposure conditions.

Ideal for older masonry, damaged render, breeze blocks, or plasterboard, textured coatings help cover surface flaws quickly. They reduce preparation time and apply easily with a brush, roller, or spray. From subtle stippled effects to heavy-duty roughcast finishes, these products offer various levels of surface texture and coverage. Most are single-pack and fast drying, making them a time-saving choice for decorators and property managers.

On interior surfaces, textured coatings are often used where a smooth finish is difficult to achieve. These products can also serve as an alternative to standard wall paint, especially where there’s a need to hide imperfections or add surface character. Exterior options, meanwhile, are designed to withstand harsh weather and resist cracking, flaking, or water ingress over time. Some textured products are suitable for overhead use, offering an alternative to traditional ceiling paint where surfaces are uneven or prone to movement. Flexible formulations are also available for use on older buildings, timber cladding, or unstable substrates. A wide choice of 5,000+ colours is available, including RAL, BS, and NCS finishes. Whether you’re tackling a single room or a large-scale refurbishment, textured paints help simplify the job and improve results.

Textured Paint FAQs

Do textured paints need special surface preparation before application?

Yes, although textured paints are designed to mask imperfections, proper surface preparation is still important. Loose material, flaking paint, grease, or dust must be removed to ensure good adhesion. On porous or chalky substrates, a suitable primer or stabilising solution may be required to prevent uneven drying or absorption. While the texture can help disguise minor damage, large cracks or unstable areas should always be repaired first. For the best results, always follow the product’s technical data sheet or seek expert advice.

Can textured paint be applied over previously painted surfaces?

In most cases, yes. Textured paint can be applied over existing coatings, provided the surface is sound, clean, and dry. Glossy or smooth finishes should be lightly abraded to promote adhesion. Any peeling or loose coatings must be removed. If the existing paint is water-sensitive or incompatible - such as certain limewash or distemper products - a primer or sealer may be necessary before applying a textured topcoat. It's always recommended to carry out a test area or speak to a technical advisor when painting over unknown finishes.

Are textured paints suitable for areas with high moisture, like kitchens or bathrooms?

Some textured paints can be used in high-humidity areas, but not all are formulated to resist moisture, steam, or condensation. Standard interior textured coatings may struggle in damp environments and could develop mould or show signs of breakdown over time. For kitchens, bathrooms, or utility rooms, it’s best to choose anti-mould paints. Check the product label or technical guidance to ensure the paint is appropriate for wet or humid conditions.

Is textured paint suitable for use in listed or heritage buildings?

In some cases, yes. Subtle textured finishes may be acceptable for interior renovation in heritage properties, particularly when aiming to replicate historic plasterwork. However, planning restrictions may apply externally. Always consult with a conservation officer before applying coatings to listed buildings.

Can textured paint be painted over in the future?

Yes, but the surface will retain its original texture unless it is sanded smooth or skimmed with filler. If repainting with another textured finish, choose a compatible product and test adhesion on a small area first. For a smooth look, additional surface preparation will be needed before recoating.
