Can you use decking oil on cladding?

It is always best to use an all-round oil or specific oils for vertical surfaces, rather than wood oils meant for other uses. Decking oil in particular often has anti-slip properties that are simply not required on vertically-installed wood cladding.

Also note that our top picks for decking - Osmo Decking-Oil - and cladding - Osmo UV-Protection Oil - have different application and preparation requirements for the type of wood you intend to oil.

Should I oil cedar cladding?

Cedar wood cladding can be treated, weatherproofed, and waterproofed, with wood oil. Osmo recommends that new or freshly sanded ingredient rich wood such as cedar needs at least 12 weeks exposure to exterior elements before application.

After the weathering period, it’s generally recommended to de-grey the bare surface with Osmo Wood Reviver Power-Gel, damp rinse, then clean the surface from the extractive content before application - always trial apply!

How do you waterproof wooden cladding?

Wood oils nourish and protect wood from within, including waterproofing. They help regulate moisture in the fibres and protect the coating against mould, algae and fungal attack.

How do I stop my wood cladding going GREY?

Wood will naturally grey in exposure to sunlight; Osmo UV-Protection Oil works by slowing greying process by (UV factor) 12 times in comparison to untreated wood. For already-greyed wood, see Osmo Wood Reviver Power-Gel.
