Intumescent Paint for Wood

Intumescent coatings for timber are a passive fire protection measure designed to expand under heat, forming a char that insulates the surface and slows ignition. These coatings are essential for structural and solid timber where a specific fire resistance rating - usually 30 or 60 minutes - is required. When applied to compliant substrates such as doors or load-bearing wood components, they help delay structural collapse, offering valuable evacuation time during a fire.

Intumescent Paint for Wood – Fire Rated Coatings in Clear & Colour Finishes

Timber used in construction must meet modern fire safety requirements to protect life and property. Intumescent paint provides a critical form of passive fire protection by forming a protective barrier during a fire. When heated, the coating swells into a dense char that slows heat transfer and prevents the wood from igniting quickly.

These coatings are suitable for structural timbers, including beams, columns and timber panelling, helping buildings meet regulations for loadbearing capacity, insulation and integrity. Available in coloured or clear finishes, they enable compliance without compromising visual appearance in heritage or decorative settings.

Different project requirements may also call for fire retardant paints, which delay flame spread and reduce smoke generation. These are typically chosen where fire resistance is not needed but surface reaction must be limited. Technical advice is essential to ensure the correct system is used for your substrate, location and fire rating specification.

Intumescent Paint for Wood FAQs

Can I apply intumescent paint directly over old coatings?

No. Most intumescent paints must be applied to bare timber or surfaces primed with compatible primers. Old coatings, including varnishes and paints, can affect adhesion and fire performance. Surface preparation, such as sanding or chemical stripping, may be required. A trial patch or adhesion test is advisable before full application. Always check the product's data sheet and consult the manufacturer or a fire protection specialist for guidance on preparing previously coated surfaces.

Are intumescent paints suitable for decorative wood finishes?

Yes, but it depends on the product. Clear intumescent systems are specifically designed to preserve the visual appearance of wood while offering fire resistance. These are often used in heritage buildings or high-end commercial interiors. However, they require strict application to achieve tested film builds. Any topcoats used for aesthetic purposes must also be compatible and approved within the tested system. Decorative finishes must never compromise fire protection performance or interfere with intumescence.

What happens if the required dry film thickness is not achieved?

Failure to reach the correct dry film thickness (DFT) will compromise the fire rating and can invalidate certification. Each system has a tested DFT range that must be achieved precisely. A wet film gauge should be used during application, and DFT measurements confirmed after curing. Skipping this step may mean the coating does not expand as intended, leaving the timber vulnerable. Professional applicators or close consultation with the technical team is strongly advised for critical fire-rated projects.

Is professional application always necessary for intumescent paint?

Not in all cases, but it is strongly advised for structural applications where certified fire protection is essential. Some products are marked for "consumer use", but those restricted to "professional use only" must be applied by trained professionals. DIY use may be suitable for minor, non-structural or decorative work, but correct film thickness, compatibility, and drying times are still crucial. Any application on structural timber or load-bearing elements should follow manufacturer-approved procedures. Improper use poses serious safety risks and can result in non-compliance with building regulations.
