Oil

Protect your exterior wood window frames, sills, doors, and joinery, with window and door oil from Rawlins Paints.

Wind, rain, intense heat from the sun, UV light, and abrasion all weighs a heavy toll on external wood surfaces. Our durable oils help maintain the colour of the wood, minimising greying and discolouration from exposure outside, and the effects of weathering such as blistering, splitting, and rot.

Rawlins Paints are official stockists of Rubio Monocoat, Osmo, Blackfriar, and more, providing hard-wearing exterior wood oils to trade, commercial projects, and homeowners, in clear and coloured finishes.

At Rawlins Paints you will find the best oils for wooden window and door frames, suitable for most species of wood including oak and beech. Protect wooden window sills, window shutters, door frames, and other external joinery with the natural finish of wood oil.

External windows and doors will have to cope with extreme weathering all year round. Applying wood oil to window and door frames and sills will help them resist water and UV degradation, preventing cracks, peeling, and flaking.

Maintaining your exterior wooden surfaces will go some way to keeping them structurally sound, preventing intruders (human and animal) taking advantage of weak points around the edge of a door or window and gaining access to your property or business.

Use Rubio Monocoat and Osmo oils outside to not only protect, but also colour external wood with 20+ shades to choose from.

What is the best treatment for external oak doors?

A wood oil complete with UV protection will help keep your oak door looking as good as new; Osmo UV-Protection-Oil is ideal for all vertical wood surfaces in outdoor areas, such as external doors, and Rubio Monocoat Hybrid Wood Protector is suitable for colouring and protecting almost all exterior wood in one single layer. Both these products are also highly resistant to water, dirt, mould, algae, and fungal attacks.

How do you oil an external wooden front door?

For preparation of the surface (critical for maximum protection), Osmo states that the surface must be "clean, dry, and frost-free (moisture content max. 20%)".

"Fresh wood, containing natural wood extractives and especially hard wood needs to weather off (for approximately 6 weeks) after installation. Thereby the wood becomes absorbent and the wood finish adheres optimally".

"For renovations, clean old microporous wood finishes thoroughly. Degrey any already greyed wood before applying and clean old microporous stains thoroughly. Old paints and lacquers must be completely removed."

For application:

"Apply thinly along the wood grain and spread well. Allow to dry for approx. 12 hours under good ventilation. Then apply the second coat. When recoating colour treated surfaces, or for renovation works, one coat applied to the clean and dry surface is usually sufficient."

All of our products have data sheets available with application instructions, as well as the tins themselves. Our technical team can also be consulted on the correct techniques.

What is the best oil for wooden window frames?

Osmo and Rubio Monocoat both have products (UV-Protection Oil; Hybrid Wood Protector) for colouring, sealing, and protecting exterior wooden window frames. They provide many forms of resistance and defence for wooden frames against damaging UV, dirt, algae and mould, with excellent waterproofing.

How do you treat dry wooden window frames?

Window frames left exposed to weather are prone to dry out and crack, inviting water, rot, fungal infections, and more. Sanding these frames down and then filling in any cracks and damage can help refurbish them, before coating with an appropriate protective product such as our wood oils.

How do you treat wooden window sills?

Much the same as our advice for application to exterior doors further above; ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free from any contaminants such as waxes, paints, and varnishes by sanding and applying degreasers and cleaners. Then apply the wood oil with the grain and allow time for the first coat to dry before recoating. All application details can be found in the data sheets on each product page.

How do you waterproof a wooden window frame?

Our wood oils from Ribio Monocoat and Osmo provide excellent waterproofing to exterior wooden window frames, enhancing the look of the grain with excellent finishes and colouring.
