Exterior Wood Protection Products for Autumn, Summer, Spring and Winter

“Never order the Four Seasons from a British Menu. It’ll still be frozen throughout.” Now we’ve bid August and bad Fringe jokes a fond farewell, the weather is looking mightily menacing across the UK. With this at the forefront of our minds, we at Rawlins Paints take a look at exterior wood protection.

What might need some weather-protective TLC?

When describing Britain in the latter months of the year, tourists are sold postcard scenes. Leaves cascading and settling on idyllic park paths, purple tinted sunsets showing broody city skylines.

Those more seasoned UK dwellers may have a more accurate reconnaissance. Damp work away days at a ‘Go Ape’ or ‘Centre Parcs’, Sunday afternoons in sodden children’s playgrounds, or sprints between slippery shop arcades as hailstorms fall from perfectly cloudless skies.

With this in mind, countless exterior wood areas need our attention and protection:

  • Playgrounds
  • Garden areas
  • Bike sheds
  • Boats
  • Tourist attractions
  • Driving ranges
  • Cafes
  • Pubs
  • Cladding
  • Decking

Which Exterior Wood Protection products WE have to offer:

We are very proud of our exterior wood protection selection at Rawlins Paints. We boast the top-selling manufacturers who each have comprehensive product selections for your every project need.

We took a look at what FIVE of our many-esteemed manufacturers have to offer: Zinsser, Jotun, Mathys, Coo-Var and Wethertex.

Zinsser

Zinsser’s AllCoat Exterior range offers a performance of up to 15 years protection. As the name implies, it is not limited to wood application and can be used on metal, masonry, plastic, concrete, cladding and more.

It is ideal for new or previously painted wood and will bond with existing glossy paints without the need for sanding. It comes in an extraordinary choice of colours so you can choose a decorative finish to match your décor. It is also incredibly economical, making it one of Rawlins Paints’ most sought after products.

Jotun

Jotun’s Demidekk range is a hugely popular selection that was released to replace the Butinox collection.

As the eclectic names suggest, Jotun have looked to tend to all outdoor needs with a comprehensive set of scenarios being addressed. Demidekk Ultimate is our topseller – an opaque, waterborne exterior wood protection that is tough, durable, weather resistant, fungal resistant and UV resistant.

It offers 12 years protection and also comes in a vast array of colours. Like its Zinsser rival, it can be used on primed metal too, making it ideal for garden use. Their colour and gloss retention are exemplary also.

Mathys

The extensive Mathys range offers systems based on alkyd resins that cater for interior and exterior wood surfaces. Mathys Fassicoat works without a need for a primer, Mathys Fassitek is highly weather and UV resistant, transparent and light stable, while Mathys Fassilux is a scratch and wear resistant topcoat that can be tinted to virtually any colour. Mathys Fassithane is a hard varnish that does not yellow, nor wrinkle, and is based on polyurethane alkyd resins.

Brochures and paints in action.

Whilst being applied to brickwork rather than wood on this occasion, Zinsser’s one-minute video of a restoration project in the North East is a delight to watch. Jam Jar, a film production company in Gateshead, is given a lick of Zinsser All-Coat Exterior, and the transformation has to be seen to be believed.

In August 2016, former model Charlotte Thomson took on the unenviable task with her partner, of renovating a former seaside toilet block into an idyllic Cornish coastal property. With the simple application of Zinsser All-Coat Exterior, they transformed the old eyesore to create a breath-taking home.

The Wethertex product and colour guide explains which paint would be right for you.

The Mathys Product guide is a delightful brochure that lays out the benefits of wood, different types of wood, and how to choose the correct product.

The full Coo-Var brochure of all their products and colour options can be found here.
