Surface Preparation
The key to good sealant adhesion is a clean surface! Dusting alone may be sufficient for new porous substrates. Depending on the condition of the surface abrasion steps may be required additionally.
Application
Sika Backer Rod Fire shall be pushed into the joint with a blunt tool. To achieve maximum fire resistance between two pieces of Sika Backer Rod Fire and in corners, Sika Backer Rod Fire must be tightly fitted in the joint.
Once Sika Backer Rod Fire is in place, the remaining joint gap has to be sealed with SikaHyflex-250 Facade or Sikaflex AT Connection.
For information regarding joint dimensions and fire rating classes see EN 13501-2 assessment report and/or ETA 17/0980.
Application of Sika Backer Rod Fire
Application of Sealant
The application of Sikaflex PRO-3, SikaHyflex-250 Facade or Sikaflex AT Connection on Sika Backer Rod Fire is not different from the application on a standard PE backer rod. As the application of Sika Backer Rod Fire may have left some fibres on the substrate a short dust-removal step may be required.
IMPORTANT: The sealant must fill the entire joint or cavity and be in full contact with the joint sides. If the joint is improperly filled, good adhesion will not be achieved, and the joint’s performance will be weakened.
