Surface Preparation

Remove grease, oil and all other surface contaminations by alkaline or high pressure (steam) cleaning in combination with appropriate detergents. For optimum results remove rust, rust scale, mill scale and deteriorated coatings by abrasive blasting to Sa 2½ (ISO 8501-1 : 1988), blast profile max. 50 µm. If blasting is not possible remove loose rust and loose coatings by scraping and/or wire brushing to St 3 (ISO 8501-1 : 1988). Sand previous coatings which are in good condition to remove gloss and to roughen the surface slightly. The surface must be clean and dry during application.

Application Conditions

Temperature of air, substrate and coating material between 5 and 35°C and relative humidity below 85%. The substrate temperature must be at least 3°C above dew point.

questions Emily Barnes on 2019-08-07 17:40:34
Question:

Hello! If i were to paint this product on a steel rain barrel, both inside and outside the barrel, would it be food-grade safe? As in, is the primer safe to come into contact which would then come into contact with my plants? Thanks!

Answer:

Rust-Oleum 569/580 Quick Drying Metal Primer is not suitable for submersion so we would instead recommend Teamac Metalastic Black Bituminous.

Once completely dry and left for about two weeks it needs washing out to get rid of any residual solvent then will be fine.
